What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated experienced Electronics Design Engineer to join our dynamic team. Our organization is responsible for embedded electronics, electrical and RF technologies from design to production for a wide variety of Transportation Safety and Security Programs (TSSP) of national security missions. The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in electronics or electrical engineering principles, design, development, prototyping, and implementation. He or she will be a part of team that designs, builds, tests, integrates in a challenging fast-paced environment. These roles offer exciting opportunities to work on innovative projects and contribute to cutting-edge technologies.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Lead the design, development, and validation of complex electronic circuits, custom PCBAs, and integrated systems, by defining and implementing rigorous hardware testing and validation strategies, including functional verification, signal integrity analysis, environmental stress testing, and qualification protocols.
  • Oversee and perform the creation, review, and approval of detailed, schematics, layouts, and comprehensive design requirements documentation, design history files and test procedures to support product lifecycle management and regulatory compliance.
  • Drive the integration of advanced embedded electronics and system architectures to optimize system efficiency and robustness.
  • Establish and champion design for test (DFT), design for manufacturability (DFM), fault tree analyses and failure mode effects analysis (FMEA) processes to enhance product quality and reliability.
  • Lead troubleshooting and resolution of complex manufacturing and fleet issues, driving continuous improvement and innovation in product design and performance.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams, act as the electrical design authority and key technical liaison on cross-functional teams to ensure seamless hardware-software integration and rapid technological development.
  • Stay at the forefront of emerging technologies in electronics, electrical systems, and communication standards.
  • Provide technical expertise and strategic support to stakeholders to advance transportation technologies.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.¿
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D S&E Electrical Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.
  • Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
  • A master's or PhD degree in electronics or electrical engineering plus 3 or more years of design experiences, or a closely related engineering or scientific field plus 3 or more years of directly related experiences.
  • In-depth knowledge and extensive hands-on experience in electronic hardware design, development, and testing, including PCB schematic capture and layout for embedded systems, microcontrollers, communication protocols, such as CAN, SPI, UART, I2C
  • Proficient with industry-standard PCB design and simulation tools (e.g., Altium, Eagle, KiCad, or other software)
  • Skilled in requirement generation, mapping and integration, electrical system validation and testing methodologies
  • Solid understanding in design for manufacturability (DFM), design for test (DFT), failure mode effects analysis (FMEA)
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot complex electronic systems and optimize performance and reliability using fault tree analysis
  • Experienced in collaborating cross-functional teams with software, mechanical, and manufacturing teams to deliver effective integrated product solutions
  • Knowledge of regulatory standards and quality systems, with experience supporting documentation and compliance efforts preferred (e.g., UL, CE, FCC, and/or other standards)
  • Programming skills in C/C++/C# and Python for hardware-software integration and testing automation

About Our Team:

The Communications and Electrical Systems Technology Department is responsible for the development and integration of command, control, and communication technologies used in specialized transportation security systems. The department conducts research and development activities in the areas of high consequence software systems, custom embedded circuit design, wireless network communications, intelligent power conditioning and distribution, navigation systems, and sensors. Major programs supported by the department include the Safeguards Transporter (SGT), development of a new high security system called the Mobile Guardian Transporter (MGT) and an advanced concept surety programs called Integrated Surety Architectures (ISA). Robust security protection for transportation systems face many unique challenges, and requires exhaustive investigation and analysis of sophisticated system attacks and the associated development of countermeasures to defend and protect against such attacks. The use of modeling and simulation tools assists in the investigation, exploration, and development of new design approaches, algorithms, and design of experiments to validate system capabilities.
