What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a dedicated Systems Engineer to focus on the operational application of systems engineering within our team. In this role, you will be responsible for managing and processing reported safety events using ESHield and IT databases, ensuring accurate documentation and timely notifications, and collaborating with various stakeholders and customers across the labs.

On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Conduct causal analyses on events, occurrences, and issues including ES&H event triage, fact-finding, root cause identification, contributing factor analysis, and development of corrective actions. DOE O 232.2A criteria and determining appropriate event complexity levels.
  • Rapidly assimilate complex technical information, facilitate and guide technical meetings, and drive root-cause analysis efforts to deliver clear, actionable recommendations to technical teams.
  • Write fact-finding reports, causal analysis reports, and ORPS submissions using structured investigation methodologies and DOE-STD-1197 causal analysis standards, ensuring clear linkage between facts, issues, causes, and corrective actions.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with customers, subject matter experts, and leadership to understand reporting needs and deliver solutions that meet stakeholder expectations.
  • Interface with customers and stakeholders employing customer service skills and a consultative approach to provide guidance through the event investigation and reporting processes.
  • Support the development and maintenance of organizational metrics and trending analysis to drive continuous improvement and inform data-driven decision-making.

The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Salary Range:

$87,400 - $168,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:
  • Bachelor's degree in a STEM field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills including strong technical writing and oral presentation skills with the ability to prepare regulatory compliance documents.
  • Ability to make decisions requiring scientific, engineering, and programmatic judgement.
  • Experience with investigating events, identifying causes using structured causal analysis methodologies, and developing effective corrective actions.
  • Ability to support multiple causal analyses, fact-finding investigations, and continuous learning projects simultaneously while meeting strict regulatory timelines.
  • Familiarity with multiple ES&H disciplines and knowledge of DOE ISMS principles, DOE O 232.2A occurrence reporting requirements, and ES&H management system implementation.
  • Results-oriented individual with excellent attention to detail, strong facilitation skills, and demonstrated customer service skills in developing and sustaining effective relationships.

About Our Team:

The ES&H Assurance organization collects, analyzes, and reports information concerning Sandia's Environment, Safety, and Health (ES&H) performance; supports ES&H subject matter experts in transforming regulatory requirements into processes, procedures, and websites; provides ES&H expertise in support of the Contractor Assurance System (CAS); and provides subject matter expertise to include occurrence management, issues management, and assessments. Services include on-site technical assistance, training, document reviews, audits and assessment, ES&H operating experience/lessons learned, analysis of performance assurance information, and providing results of ad hoc queries of safety incident data.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
