What Your Job Will Be Like:

Are you passionate about your work and want to join a dynamic team that solves challenging issues for the nation's security? If so, you could be the motivated Level 1 Manager we seek to lead one of the Purchased Product Value Stream (PPVS) departments in the Product Delivery Value Streams Group (7560).

Department 7567, PPVS1, alongside PPVS2 (7569), are responsible for product engineering for nuclear weapons design, development, and production activities. PPVS1 provides technical leadership in the various engineering fields (mechanical, chemical, materials science, and electrical) to identify, develop, deliver, assure, and sustain a commercial supply base for weapon components, materials, and subassemblies for multiple production activities at Sandia including neutron generators, energetics, power sources, and ISA (MTAD, DMS Mod, ALT940). We apply technical expertise to innovate and deliver solutions and anticipate and manage risk for nuclear weapons in the design and development phases and products in full-scale production. We anticipate and manage risk within the supply chain, researching alternate materials, defining and developing test and evaluation methodologies, developing design of experiments, identifying and developing supplier capabilities, and leading qualification activities. This department also manages the tooling team, they provide tooling, gauges, and fixtures to the production floors and serve as GD&T SMEs for the NSE. We also partner closely with PPVS3 (7561), responsible for the management of production stores and ensuring the inspection, integrity, traceability, material movement, packaging design and delivery of our materials.

On any given day, you may be called to:
  • Manage a high performing team of Purchased Product Engineers and Product Engineers in their delivery of product to safety, schedule, quality, and budgetary requirements.
  • Coordinate work rooted in the fundamentals of science and engineering and that requires a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles.
  • Oversee and manage members of the workforce within the department, to include supporting the career development of staff members.
  • Team with group and center management in the development and/or continuous improvement of the engineering, manufacturing, and design work practices.
  • Motivate, mentor, and develop the team to enable them to meet the production, engineering, and design goals and challenges within the Neutron Generator & Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise Center. Sometimes these challenges include out of Center activities to help solve some of the most critical NSE problems.
  • Manage critical relationships, inclusive of external suppliers, quality partnerships, and key partners across Sandia to meet Sandia mission commitments.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range:

$163,700 - $278,000

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:
  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and eight (8) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development
  • An active DOE Q clearance, or equivalent is required to start

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D S&E Manager candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
  • Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience
  • A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.)
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage and complete multiple programs and projects

About Our Team:

The Product Delivery Value Streams Group (7560) is responsible for the manufacturing and delivery of Neutron Generators (NGs) for the Nuclear Security Enterprise and for providing Purchased Product Engineering expertise for ND Production Activities: Energetics (7450), Power Sources (7440), Neutron Generators (7560), and Agile Production (7520). The Value Streams serve in the Production Agency role and are accountable for the quality of the product from planning through acceptance and customer shipment. Group 7560 supports manufacturing operations at five levels of assembly (Purchased Products, Active Ceramics, Neutron Tubes, NG Sub-Assemblies, and Assemblies) and manages key partner interfaces. The Group builds all production and development hardware within three NG product families and nine NG products to support current and future program demands, as well as specialized S&T items. In addition to overseeing continuous production, other responsibilities include developing and maintaining qualified product definition, partnering with the Design Agency in qualifying new products, and supporting fielded NG products.

We provide technical leadership in various engineering subject areas and pursue state-of-the-art solutions in product and process engineering. We strive to maintain an agile production environment, where we sustain and ensure the highest quality and reliability possible while staying in compliance with all Environmental, Safety, Security and Health mandates. Customer needs are met through integrated planning, lean manufacturing, testing, and certification of neutron generators and their constituent components. The Value Streams are accountable for the quality of the product from planning through acceptance.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
