What Your Job Will Be Like:
We are seeking an experienced and innovative leader to manage our Critical Software Systems Department (6617). This role involves leading more than 20 full-time staff specializing in full-stack development, cyber security, AI, and field support operations. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in collaborating with leadership to design and implement numerous NA-80 Software Applications and expand SNL's role across the Nuclear Incident Response Program through innovative cloud-based data and operations management solutions. Strategic direction and investments in capabilities development have been an important cornerstone in the success of the organization, with many novel software applications and features brought to production through innovation and partnership with stakeholders.

Additionally, the R&D S&E Manager will lead the Field Radiography Science & Technology (FRST) team, which integrates over 70 years of combined expertise in military and civilian Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), non-destructive testing, and radiography research and development. The FRST team serves an essential role in software testing, training, hardware integration, and SME support for the counter-WMD mission, supporting nearly 50 formal training and exercise events for various federal agencies in FY25 alone, including international operations, in addition to direct support for CWMD inter-agency working groups, equipment test series, and radiography inspections for 6620, 9220, 7450, and others.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
- Lead and manage the deployment and sustainment of Critical Software Systems, ensuring alignment with internal and external organizations.
- Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment, mentoring staff, promoting professional development, and setting high expectations.
- Oversee and partner on the implementation of software solutions for various programs, in close coordination with relevant organizations.
- Develop and implement strategic plans for research initiatives, including resource allocation, budgeting, and timeline management for long-term R&D.
- Engage with stakeholders, including federal agencies and other partners, to maintain and advance software capabilities.
Due to the nature of this position the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.
Salary Range:
$163,700 - $278,000
*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.
Qualifications We Require:
- A bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and eight (8) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
- Active DOE Q or equivalent security clearance
Qualifications We Desire:
The ideal R&D Manager candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:
- Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
- A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.).
- Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation.
Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:
- A Masters degree in a science or engineering discipline
- Software application development experience and/or achievements that demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and ability to lead teams of developers.
- Experience working within the NA-80 Nuclear Counterterrorism Incident Response area.
- Proven interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships among direct reports, peers, management, and customers.
- Demonstrated experience developing and managing a team to high performance, including the willingness to partner effectively with other managers across the laboratory.
- Experience overseeing activity-level work.
- Strong knowledge of capabilities at Sandia and within Nuclear Security Enterprise partners.
- Experience interacting with NNSA and other external partners.
- Demonstrated experience effectively networking and partnering with organizations both inside and outside of Sandia.
- Ability to represent Sandia to external customers.
About Our Team:
The Critical Software Systems Department leads the development of more than twenty major software applications and provides support to many others. We conduct approximately $9M in software R&D annually for 6600's Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Response Program while maintaining various other long-term partnerships across the laboratory, often sharing program/project ownership responsibilities with our partners. Our software development teams also draw from staff across 6610 and other organizations to augment our capabilities, and all our teams support the full spectrum of software systems realization from the initial definition of requirements to distribution, security, training, and technical support for software end-users. We apply computer science and systems engineering principles to ensure our customer's product meets the national mission with top-level performance, maintainability, security, reusability, and scalability.

Security Clearance:
Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
