Job Summary

The Role

Manage project initiatives designed to improve the effectiveness of the manufacturing process in the areas of Safety, Productivity, Efficiency, and Quality. This position strongly supports the commitment to ensure that all products, processes, and procedures are in compliance with established CertainTeed manufacturing policies and specifications that consistently meet or exceed our customer expectations. The position requires effective leadership in the production process and acts as a liaison between all the major departments: production, engineering, maintenance, logistics and quality. In this role, the Engineer will support the plants of Wilmington, Portland, and Fremont as directed.

  • Develops, directs, and maintains process improvement objectives with the plant management staff in order to maximize safety, productivity, quality, and efficiency.
  • Responsibilities include the designing and developing of new process systems, revising/maintaining existing processes; developing and implementing WCM projects, managing and guiding contractors, consultants, and suppliers; identifying new opportunities and solutions with cost/ benefit analysis, and making recommendations to improve efficiencies.
  • Planning and execution of capital projects - preparing capital expenditures.
  • Manages process team's workflow including planning, evaluation, organizing, and implementing installation, maintenance, and repair activities and coordinating with other departments to assure minimum downtime for production and maximum safety of employees.
  • Performs root-cause analysis as well as implements sustainable countermeasures on losses related to maintenance.
  • Assist in the development or standard operating procedures and work instructions regarding process improvements.
  • Assists in the development of training requirements for product quality and production reliability.
  • Provides general technical support and leadership to the plant management, supervisory, and hourly employees.
  • Active participant in investigation of EH&S incidents - Injuries/incidents, Near Misses, First Aid, Environmental and Property/Equipment Damage when engineering input is necessary.
  • May be required to perform other duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
  • Actively participates in continuous improvement processes to better serve customers and improve the overall profitability of CertainTeed.
  • Actively promote Saint-Gobain's EHS and VMVO objectives.
  • Make suggestions for improving product quality, processes, safety, and company profitability.
  • Manufacturing plant is not temperature controlled; dust, fumes, and high noise areas >80db are present inside plant areas. Manufacturing processes involve granules, silica sand, fiberglass, asphalt coating, crushed rock, and polypropylene. Moving equipment such as forklifts, genie booms, and industrial sweepers travel throughout the facility.

Required Qualifications

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4-yr Engineering degree (5+ years of Engineering Experience Preferred)
  • Six Sigma/Lean Manufacturing experience
  • Proficient in use of MS Office and Auto-Cad
  • General understanding of World Class Manufacturing Methodology
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, speak clearly so others understand, vision acuity to see details within a few feet of an observer, accepting of criticism and dealing calmly and effectively with high-stress situations, sensitivity to other's needs, positive demeanor, and model change management for the business. This role will require 50% travel in an effort to support the West Coast plants of Fremont CA, Wilmington CA, and Portland OR.
