Position Description

Job Summary

Saint-Gobain Research North America is looking for an R&D Director to lead the development and support commercialization of innovative solutions for light and sustainable construction. In this role, you will lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers, designers, and scientists in daily collaboration with startups, universities, suppliers, and Saint-Gobain's global R&D community to deliver new products and systems that drive long-term profitable growth for CertainTeed in the North America Construction Market.

Key Functions of the Role:

  • Work with the global Saint-Gobain R&D community to share and leverage capabilities and coordinate the advancement of strategic technologies.
  • Lead complex, multidisciplinary projects together with business units, technical and business teams (R&D, Product Management, Operations, Sales) plus CertainTeed Strategy, Marketing, Customer Experience, and Building Science teams.
  • Drive innovation that will materially grow the business over the long term
  • Build intellectual property position to ensure long-term strategic advantage.
  • Lead and support open innovation with external partners (customers, start-ups, corporate partners, suppliers) and oversee select business development activities to incubate breakthrough innovations and business models.
  • Establish strong Portfolio Management processes and tools utilized across CertainTeed.
  • Be a member of the Senior Leadership team at Saint-Gobain Research North America providing direction on strategic issues for the 350+ technical staff.

Competencies:

  • Demonstrated experience leading a multidisciplinary R&D team in developing new, physical products from opportunity analysis to commercialization.
  • Expertise in a broad set of skills and technologies relevant to building and construction markets
  • Strong strategic analysis skills with experience in innovation strategy, marketing, and/or business planning/development
  • Demonstrated success in influencing organizational strategy and effecting change across organizational boundaries
  • Demonstrated strong business acumen with an understanding of the financial implications of new product and technology development.
  • Understand the use of science, technology, and design as a competitive differentiator, specifically driving the creative process and ideation funnel.
  • Knowledge of the processes used to create, document, and pursue formalized intellectual property
  • Trained in behavior-based safety and an advocate for safe and responsible laboratory practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree with 15+ years of experience, or Ph.D. with 12+ years of experience in architecture, engineering (mechanical, chemical, or structural), or material sciences
