You will partner closely with Product, Design, Trust & Safety, Legal, Marketing, and cross-functional engineering teams to shape community experiences that are reliable, safe, and aligned with learning outcomes.
This role requires strong technical leadership, including driving architectural decisions, improving engineering practices, navigating ambiguous problem spaces, and coordinating execution across complex initiatives. You’ll also help elevate the broader team through technical mentorship, design reviews, and a high bar for engineering quality and operational excellence.
We’re happy to share that this is an onsite position in our Denver office. To help foster team collaboration, we require that employees be in the office a minimum of three days per week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday and as needed by your manager or the company. We believe that this working environment facilitates increased work efficiency, team partnership, and supports growth as an employee and organization.
In this role, you will:
- Drive technical design, implementation, and delivery for complex projects that span systems, features, or teams
- Navigate evolving product spaces, define requirements and success metrics, and create clarity across engineering and cross-functional partners
- Build and improve scalable, reliable, maintainable, and observable systems that support critical user experiences
- Partner with Product, Design, Data Science, and engineering teams to deliver impactful features that improve learner and business outcomes
- Influence architectural decisions, identify high-leverage opportunities, and help shape long-term engineering investments
- Support growth of peers through technical guidance, design reviews, pairing, and knowledge sharing
- Break down large initiatives, coordinate execution across project teams, and proactively mitigate technical risks
- Establish and reinforce best practices across testing, observability, reliability, deployment, and developer workflows
What you bring to the table:
- 7+ years of engineering experience building and scaling consumer-facing products, distributed systems, or platform capabilities
- Proven ability to lead complex technical initiatives from concept through delivery, often coordinating execution across engineers, systems, or teams
- Strong experience with backend or full-stack technologies, with the ability to contribute to architectural and implementation decisions across the stack
- Deep technical design expertise with a focus on scalability, maintainability, reliability, and long-term system health
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions and drive alignment across engineering and cross-functional stakeholders
- Experience aligning engineering execution with product goals and business outcomes through thoughtful prioritization, tradeoff analysis, and delivery planning
- A track record of improving systems, engineering practices, or developer workflows to increase reliability, efficiency, scalability, and team effectiveness
- Experience mentoring engineers and elevating team quality through technical leadership, feedback, and strong engineering practices
Bonus points if you have:
- Experience building and scaling education-focused or consumer-facing applications
- Full-stack experience across backend systems and web applications
- Experience with community-driven or multi-user experiences, or systems that drive user motivation and engagement
- Experience working in environments with high data or performance requirements
- Experience improving developer experience, internal tooling, or engineering productivity across teams
- Hands-on involvement in incident management, operational excellence, or reliability engineering practices
