Job Summary:

The Controller provides leadership, develops policies, and directs the financial activities to assure accurate reporting of the financial status of Propel Schools. The Controller oversees all accounting and financial reporting activities of the organization, and its affiliated network of charter schools, to ensure that financial information managed and disseminated by the unit is accurate and in compliance with accounting principles and organizational standards.

Supervises daily accounting activities; responsible for ensuring productive functioning of accounting staff; oversees general ledger; prepares audit/tax schedules and financial reports; liaisons with program staff and external auditors.

Key Job Elements:

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the timely processing and integrity of all financial transactions and recording into the General Ledger. Review reconciliations for all depository and money market cash accounts, and analyses of long term investment accounts; review journal entries prior to general ledger posting; review all entries posted to the General Ledger and prepare correcting entries if necessary.
  • Provide financial accounting and reporting oversight; assessment and compliance with GAAP, FASB, GASB and audit guidelines; process evaluation, improvement and documentation of general accounting, accounts payable and cash disbursement procedures.
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual closings and preparation of supporting schedules; maintain schedule of fixed assets and prepare depreciation entries; maintain chart of accounts.
  • Prepare monthly board financial statements for schools and foundation.
  • Oversee and coordinate activities with external auditors. Manage the assembling of schedules and documents for annual audit, IRS 990 and tax returns; prepare draft of annual financial statements.
  • Development and documentation of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Program Financial Reporting: facilitate the generation of periodic programmatic financial reports; gather and analyze data taken from accounting system and other off-line financial reports; summarize data and format in accordance with programmatic/funder requirements.
  • Plan and prepare for the annual budgeting process. Prepare annual filing of PDE-2028.
  • Analyze variances, research discrepancies and prepare necessary accounting journal entries.
  • In collaboration with the CFO: 1) prepare financial projections using budget assumptions, actual expenditures, and input from program staff; 2) highlight/analyze key financial data for leadership, finance committee and board.
  • Assist program staff with modifying program spending plans and update projections accordingly.
  • Advise and serve as liaison to schools' operations staff on fiscal responsibilities
  • Prepare analytical reports as requested.
  • Prepare required reports to the Pennsylvania Department of Education and other funders.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Conduct annual performance evaluations and provide ongoing meaningful feedback.
  • Set goals and evaluate progress on a regular basis.
  • Identify professional development opportunities.
  • Address performance problems in a timely and effective manner.
  • Communicate organizational news and information on a regular basis.

Qualifications & Skills:

Required:

Education and Experience

  • B.A. or equivalent with accounting/finance major.
  • 7 years of nonprofit accounting experience;
  • 7 years of supervisory experience.

Required Skill Sets and Knowledge Base

  • Experience in Blackbaud Financial Edge accounting software or other non profit accounting system;
  • Expert knowledge of GASB, FASB and GAAP governmental and not-for-profit accounting
  • Experience with financial controls, procedures documentation and implementation;
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, written communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills are required;
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills, and the ability to work with, motivate, develop, and manage a diverse staff;

Preferred:

Education and Experience

  • Master's degree and/or CPA strongly preferred
