(Sr.) EMS Engineer I (II)

The (Sr.) EMS Engineer I (II) will work on the real-time support, maintenance, and long-term design of the PJM EMS, in all of it's core facets including SCADA, AGC and NA (Network Applications). For most candidates starting roles will focus on SCADA, data structures, and daily workflows related to the upkeep of the Bulk Electric System grid. The Engineer will matrix with a dynamic team that covers everything from real-time emergency support of EMS function, all the way to research and development of new EMS technologies and techniques. Primary responsibility and customer the PJM Control Room, including Dispatch and Reliability Engineers, whom the team works closely with. Other responsibilities include PJM stakeholder engagements as a technical SME, helping meeting FERC/NERC compliance obligations, periodic on-call support, and keeping up with governing documents such as PJM Manuals. A wide range of skills may be deployed including database, data structures, scripting for automation, advanced application usage, and application of power sciences to tune model and parameters to best monitor the grid.

Essential Functions:

  • Engage in all engineering and maintenance activities to provide the EMS with all major data inputs, including real-time telemetry over ICCP and DNP protocols, and equipment ratings via eDART.
  • Support equipment outages, data link maintenance, and new gen integration events, both in-real time, and by maintaining data and link structures that are robust and organized.
  • Tune Network Application solutions in State Estimation and Contingency Analysis. Interface with grid modeling teams, SCADA teams, and Dispatch to constantly maintain an accurate and robust solution.
  • Engineer and maintain critical sub-systems and such as Internet-based SCADA links for smaller generation resources.
  • For large capital projects to update, upgrade or replace major systems, engage in scoping, describing, testing and ultimately delivering new components to the EMS.
  • Help support real-time critical operations, including emergency support, periodic on-call support, and hot-cold weather support .
  • Help maintain critical data sets, such as regulation fleets, tie-lines, gross vs net gen mappings, and others, that reside between long-term modeling and real-time data.
  • Engage productively with a wide variety of internal and external parties to effectively complete tasks, including PJM Planning, Client Management, Dispatch, Real-time Markets, and externally with Transmission Owners, Generation Owners, and 3rd party integrators.
  • Understand NERC/FERC compliance obligations pertaining the EMS and EMS operations, and help craft process and controls for compliance, and evidence collection.

Characteristics & Qualifications:

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience
  • Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail
  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis
  • Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory
  • Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support
  • Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory
  • Experience using OASIS, TSS, Regulation Logger, Constraint Logger, State Estimator, ACES, TMs, ITS, EMS and Unit Commitment software
  • Experience with Siemens Spectrum Energy Management Systems
  • Experience with power flow applications such as PSS/E, PSS-MUST, TARA, PAAC, EMS or equivalent

Preferred:

  • Master's Degree in Engineering
  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions
  • Experience using PSS/e (power system analysis program)
