Associate Principal Engineer - Machine Safety Trainee

This role is part of the Global Foods R&D organization, embedded within the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) team supporting both our Plano R&D and TPC teams in Dallas, Texas. The position is responsible for leading the Machine Safety agenda for PepsiCo Foods North America, working closely with external safety experts who bring deep knowledge of regulations and standards to help develop safety design solutions and remediation plans for process equipment.

As a member of the EHS team, this role also supports PepsiCo R&D through the Management of Change (MOC) process for all new or modified equipment, ensuring compliance with PepsiCo's safety standards. Given our fast-paced environment, the scope of this role includes managing third-party contractors to ensure that risk assessments, remediation activities, and equipment validations are completed thoroughly and properly documented.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the PepsiCo Foods R&D Machine Safety agenda, including both short- and long-term strategies for new and legacy equipment. This includes ownership of the PepsiCo Machine Equipment Safety Standard (MESS).
  • Partner with stakeholders to support the Management of Change (MOC) process for all new, relocated, or modified legacy process equipment.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for contractors performing machine safety activities such as risk assessments, remediation, and validation. Actively participate in all risk and design reviews.
  • Collaborate with the EHS and project teams to establish machinery safety priorities that align with project timelines and address legacy equipment modifications.
  • Co-lead the Hazardous Energy Control program in partnership with relevant teams.
  • Lead the development of a 5-year capital strategy and manage the annual operating budget for machine safety.
  • Develop strategies to address legacy equipment challenges, including innovative and cost-effective solutions that meet PepsiCo standards.
  • Manage both Capital and Expense dollars related to Machine Safety programs.
  • Build technical knowledge and expertise in process safety to support both core and transformational capability needs, growing into a subject matter expert for Global R&D.
  • Pursue ongoing education to develop expertise in machinery safety design, enhance process safety knowledge, and stay current with applicable government regulations (OSHA/EN-ISO) and consensus standards (ANSI/NFPA). Aim to complete FS Eng. TÜV Rheinland certification if not already obtained.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • The expected compensation range for this position is between $89,000 - $149,000.
  • Location, confirmed job-related skills, experience, and education will be considered in setting actual starting salary. Your recruiter can share more about the specific salary range during the hiring process.
  • Bonus based on performance and eligibility target payout is 10% of annual salary paid out annually.
  • Paid time off subject to eligibility, including paid parental leave, vacation, sick, and bereavement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's (min) in engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, or Industrial)
  • BS with 5+ years of experience in Food Manufacturing/Processing.
  • MS/PhD with 3+ years of experience in Food Manufacturing/Processing.
  • Preferred CMSE technician in machine safety
  • Demonstrated curiosity for learning and growth
  • Interest and capability to pursue Functional Safety certification FS Eng TÜV Rheinland and other defined process safety courses as required by PepsiCo.
