As a Research Scientist - Level 2 or Level 3 located in Promontory, UT, you'll be a linchpin in missions of paramount importance, defining the art of the possible from day one.
A liner and insulation scientist creates innovative methodologies to solve complex engineering challenges and implements solutions that improve performance, reliability, reduce lifecycle costs, manage material and supplier changes, and qualify new materials and processes. They are the principal investigators and contributors for test efforts involving materials and processes necessary for rubber production, processing, and post processing activities.
This position will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off or the 4/10 schedule with every Friday off.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Conduct assigned liner and insulation activities as an individual contributor
Perform tasks within assigned budgets, and schedules coordinating with program managers, IR&D leadership, project engineers, and others in Propulsion Systems
Develop engineering methodology and maintenance tasks to execute program needs
Material specialist and maintainer of specifications for rubber formulations
Manage formulation component changes due to obsolescence, supplier changes, processing changes
Define requirements and qualify materials and processes
Define test objectives, author engineering test plans, write detailed planning to direct test efforts, prepare test reports, and provide oversight for test activities
Present data and recommendations to internal and external customers
Support both near-term production needs and long-term growth efforts
Conduct support efforts for a variety of customers (internal and external)
Grow and develop technical knowledge and depth within the group

Basic Qualifications for Level 2:

Bachelor's degree (Engineering or Science discipline) with 2 years of professional experience - OR - Master's degree with 0 years of professional experience.
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance
Experience with polymers or formulated rubber thermal insulation necessary for development and qualification efforts
Experience across multiple engineering disciplines and their interactions
U.S. Citizenship is required at the time of application.
*Basic Qualifications for
Level 3:


Bachelor's degree (Engineering or Science discipline) with 5 years of professional experience - OR - Master's degree with 3 years of professional experience - OR - PhD with 1 year of professional experience.
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance
Professional experience with polymers or formulated rubber thermal insulation necessary for development and qualification efforts
Professional experience across multiple engineering disciplines and their interactions
Prior experience guiding and mentoring junior scientists
U.S. Citizenship is required at the time of application
Preferred Qualifications:

DoD Clearance
Prior experience in insulation, liner, or solid rocket motor component development and qualification efforts
Proven leadership qualities and strong interpersonal skills
Experience with proposal and pricing efforts supporting production programs
Experience with anomaly investigations identifying cause and corrective actions
Familiarity with polymer science, polymer formulations, testing techniques related to polymers and composites
Programming experience in MATLAB, Python, R or similar
Master's Degree and/or PhD in Chemistry, Engineering, Material Science, or Polymer Science

Primary Level Salary Range: $79,300.00 - $118,900.00Secondary Level Salary Range: $98,400.00 - $147,600.00The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
