Department Profile

The Fixed Income Division is comprised of Interest Rate and Currency Products, Credit Products and Distribution. Professionals in the Division assess and actively manage risk, trade securities, and structure as well as execute innovative transactions in the fast-paced and constantly changing global markets. Morgan Stanley aligns its municipal investment banking, underwriting, sales, trading, lending, and M&A advisory in one integrated organizational group under the umbrella of the Municipal Securities Division.

Background on the Team

Within Municipal Securities, Municipal Lending provides direct capital to public sector entities and not-for-profit institutions in the United States. The group deploys Morgan Stanley's balance sheet to purchase securities or commit funding in the form of direct-registered loans. Distinct functions within the Municipal Lending group include client coverage and deal origination, quantitative structuring and credit analysis, and ongoing portfolio risk management.

The Municipal Lending Desk Strat, specifically, will be embedded within the business unit and provide quantitative analysis, data-driven insights, and customized tools for the desk.

The successful candidate would work alongside the IT team, other strats, and senior management while being fully immersed with the business unit to understand pain points and opportunities. We are looking for self-motivated individuals with combined technical/quantitative skills and financial expertise. The candidate will leverage their strong understanding of finance and technology to quickly deliver systematic solutions that will provide immediate impact.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain tools and dashboards to streamline and enhance efficiency in client pitches, borrower credit modelling, transaction returns and risk analytics, transaction execution, and portfolio reporting
  • Perform data-driven analysis to provide strategic insights into industry trends, deal opportunities, and business strategies
  • Work closely with financial controllers to create and maintain trade booking infrastructure
  • Serve as a liaison between business and IT to project manage and deliver innovative solutions for Municipal Lending
  • Analyze and interpret business requirements to proactively identify opportunities and improvement areas
  • Gain expertise in Municipal Securities business processes, trade booking systems, and downstream risk systems to inform decision-making related to the responsibilities listed above

Skills Desired
  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in quantitative field such as Mathematics, Computer Science/Engineering or Finance/Economics with software development experience
  • 1-6 years of work experience
  • Proficiency in programming languages, ideally Python, Scala, KDB, and SQL, and experience with financial modelling tools like Excel
  • Working knowledge of Fixed Income products
  • Experience with data-visualization platforms
  • Experience with financial databases and data analysis, including timeseries, risk modelling, pricing, and working with reference data
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple priorities
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Accuracy, strong attention to detail, and ability to work thoughtfully and independently
