Job Description
The Opportunity:
The Senior Manager, Safety & Compliance Engineer will report directly to the VP of Product Safety, Regulatory, Compliance & Quality Digital Transformation and Systems and will partner with internal and external stakeholders to ensure that all products meet consumer product safety requirements. This role serves as a product safety leader, embedding a culture of safety across the organization through thought leadership, practical guidance, and training. It represents an excellent opportunity for someone with an engineering and regulatory background, along with experience in product safety for children’s products. The position is based in East Aurora, NY.

- Fully participate in the Safety Advisory Panel Meetings (SAP) a to review product related issues and present the information to the SAP. The role will also interact with the subject matter experts/engineers (e.g. various project teams) when safety incidents arise. Assist revising the SAP process as necessary.
- Manage and lead safety incident investigation process including risk assessment and follow-up analysis
- Manage reporting to regulatory agencies after review of safety incident data
- Provide key inputs to participate and present Safety data at the Monthly ELT Product Safety
- Lead and participate in the Hazard Analysis (HA) meetings. This also includes answering questions related to product development and/or Play Lab receive on an ongoing basis. Additionally, the role will interact with subject matter experts/engineers when specific issues arise. Assist in revising the HA process as necessary.
- Manage the Lead Safety Data Associate’s planning of the Medical and Scientific Safety Council’s
- quarterly and ad hoc meetings related to:
- Work with product development and Play Lab teams when they identify key issues for review by the MSSC. (Possibly through Hazard Analysis meetings)
- Identifying any additional key substantive issues from the SAP meetings to present to MSSC and ensure MSSC feedback is communicated adequately back to the SAP. Ensure confidentiality of all information.
- Identifying any necessary internal and external work with engineering, medical and related experts to develop content and presentations for the Quarterly and Ad Hoc meetings.
- As well as any potential drafting of MSSC process documents (including QSOPs) for an efficient and effective MSSC process going forward. Work with companion team to align on the process and implement the process throughout Mattel. Track the process and revise if necessary.

- Manage the Regulatory Project Management Specialist in his role to ensure all relevant product safety data is collected, reviewed and processed according to the relevant QSOPs.
- This includes data presentation and data reporting to regulatory agencies.
- Manage the Regulatory Project Management Specialist in his role to ensure recall execution, recall trainings, and recall processes are handled appropriately and updated regularly.
- Lead the product Safety data initiatives related to product safety data, data dashboard, data review, and engagement with the Quality Data analytics team and the Quality Digital Transformation & Systems team.
- Participate in relevant ASTM Standards related to product safety.
- Lead JPMA Certification engagements.
- Lead engagement with legal team as necessary related to product safety issues.
- Lead company-wide trainings and informational sessions and manage your team’s trainings to the company on issues related to product safety, hazard analysis, safety incidents and data, and related topics.
- Represent Mattel’s commitment to excellence in product safety at various trade association meetings, industry-wide conferences, and safety-related events
- Conduct research and present findings enterprise-wide on relevant children’s products and new developments in children’s products industry as needed, research and literature searches associated with product safety.
Qualifications
What We’re Looking For:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Sciences.
- 9-12 years’ experience working at a consumer products company; experience with toys and juvenile products is preferred.
- Must be able to perform engineering and data analysis.
- Knowledge of product safety regulations including Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), code of federal regulations, and related product safety state regulations.
- Decision making expertise especially related to safety and regulatory advice to be leveraged in connection with the MSSC, SAP, and Hazard Analysis Committee.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment.
- Proficient computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- High level of personal and professional integrity and trustworthiness with strong work ethic and the ability to work independently with minimal direction.
- Excellent communications and presentation skills.
- Resourceful, diplomatic and professional; deliver outstanding customer service while managing relationships; a can-do attitude and work style that supports teamwork and lead teams when necessary, collaboration and positive relationships.

*The pay range is indicative of projected hiring range, however base pay will be determined based on a candidate’s work location, skills and experience.
