Software Engineer
Job Description:
This role is part of a CARS (Cognitive Agentic & Robotic Services) DevOps squad responsible for migrating Mars' enterprise automation estate from Automation Anywhere to open-source Python on the Convergence home-grown platform. The Software Engineer builds, migrates, tests, and supports production automations, using AI-assisted development to accelerate delivery while meeting CARS quality and audit standards. The role helps deliver one of the core enablers of Mars' digital strategy - a modern, pro-code automation platform that drives efficiency, resilience, and cost savings across hundreds of business processes. The work is grounded in disciplined verification, ensuring migrated and new automations are correct, tested, supportable and audit-ready.
Migration & Development
- Migrate and rebuild automation use cases from Automation Anywhere to Python on the Convergence platform, working from defined specifications and reusable patterns.
- Use AI coding assistants to accelerate development, then review, test, and harden the generated code so it behaves identically to the original automation.
- Build new automations as the backlog grows, following CARS coding standards and shared libraries.
- Refactor and debug existing Python automations to improve reliability and maintainability.

Quality & Verification
- Write and run automated tests that prove each migrated automation matches the original process behavior and quality standards.
- Treat AI-generated code with healthy skepticism, validating outputs rather than accepting them at face value.
- Produce the test evidence required to meet ITGC audit standards.
- Pair with senior engineers on complex or audit-sensitive use cases.
Support & Operations
- Provide first-line support and triage for migrated automations in production, escalating complex issues to senior engineers.
- Monitor automation runs and help resolve failures quickly to keep business processes running.
Collaboration & Learning
- Participate in code reviews, squad ceremonies, and continuous improvement of the CARS development framework.
- Document automations and changes to support handoff, scalability, and audit.
- Actively build Python, testing, and platform skills with coaching from senior engineers.
- The role operates within a CARS DevOps squad, reporting to the Senior Manager, CARS, with technical direction and code review from the squad's Senior Software Architect and the CARS Senior Engineering Lead.
- The associate works in an Agile delivery model where AI-assisted development is a core part of the daily workflow, balanced by disciplined testing and verification.
- Technology scope includes but is not limited to: Python, Git, CI/CD pipelines, SQL Server, AI coding assistants, Automation Anywhere (source platform being retired), and the Convergence home-grown platform.
Required:
- Working proficiency in Python, including development and debugging
- Working knowledge of object-oriented programming
- SQL and data querying basics
- Solid grasp of software testing and the discipline to verify that code behaves as intended
- Ability to read, understand, and repair code written by others, including AI-generated code
- Familiarity with version control (Git) and basic CI/CD concepts
- Hands-on experience running software in production, including monitoring, incident response, and operational support
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and willingness to work with AI-assisted development tools
- Fluent English (written and verbal) - required for global collaboration
Preferred:
- Exposure to RPA platforms (Automation Anywhere, UiPath, or Blue Prism)
- Hands-on use of AI coding assistants (Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini, Claude)
- Cloud fundamentals (Azure or GCP)
- Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (pytest or similar)
- Experience in a large enterprise or ITSM environment
