Staff Counsel - Workers' Compensation

This role is primarily remote in the state of California except for required appearances.
We have an exciting opportunity for a Workers' Compensation Attorney admitted and residing in California. This role is primarily remote except for required appearances. You will be handling a caseload of workers' compensation matters, conduct depositions, and represent Liberty Mutual and its policyholders at WC hearings. You will also interact with Liberty Mutual's Workers' Compensation claims organization.

Responsibilities:
- Use Litigation Protocols to develop and revise appropriate legal strategy for discovery, investigation, handling and trial/hearing of cases or matters
- Responsible for appearances before the Workers Compensation Board, conducting depositions, drafting, and filing summations, appeals and rebuttals.
- Research the law applicable to cases or matters; drafts legal documents, pleadings, motions, briefs, and opinions as required. If requested, conduct settlement negotiations.
- Advise, communicate and confer with Claims Representatives and Insured Clients, rendering clear, unambiguous legal opinions and advice. Personally meet with and maintain good relations and communications with Claims Representatives and Insured Clients as required.
- Remain current with developments in the law; understand medical, scientific, construction, products, engineering or similar issues and defenses involved with cases or matters.
- Prepare and conduct training sessions for Legal, Claims or other departments as required.
- Provide daily direction and guidance to junior attorneys.
- Understand and creatively use technology; apply technology to the process of law to improve quality and reduce cost.
- Act as a team or group leader for an assigned group handling workers compensation cases.
- Interface with Home Office Legal department.

- Membership in the California State Bar
- Appropriate special licenses to practice before boards or federal courts preferred
- A minimum of five years' experience as an attorney; Workers' Compensation experience strongly required
- Proven experience managing moderately complex to complex litigation with demonstrated success in achieving favorable outcomes.
- Exceptional legal research, writing, negotiation, and analytical skills.
- Proficient in advanced e-discovery tools, legal case management software, and remote collaboration technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead junior attorneys and legal staff.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and client relationship management skills.
- Commitment to ethical legal practice and compliance with all regulatory and professional standards.
Pay Philosophy: The typical starting salary range for this role is determined by a number of factors including skills, experience, education, certifications and location. The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role. Some roles at Liberty Mutual have a corresponding compensation plan which may include commission and/or bonus earnings at rates that vary based on multiple factors set forth in the compensation plan for the role.
