Sr. Surety Underwriter

  • Solicit surety account submissions from assigned producer plant via marketing efforts.
  • Perform analytical evaluations of financial statements on both a static and trend basis.
  • Determine the present and historical financial position of the account and monitors financial position of risk through analysis of quarterly statements and work in progress data.
  • Develop/maintain strong relationships with agents/brokers and oversee a book of Surety business within defined territory/product line.
  • Meet production, marketing, and profitability goals as set by manager and assist in developing marketing plan.
  • Meet with agents to solicit business/submissions and educate agency representative(s) on Liberty Mutual Surety policies, procedures, appetite, and requirements.
  • Act in a consultative capacity and discuss/review agency accounts and performance.
  • Stay abreast of Liberty Mutual Surety product lines and identify cross-selling opportunities with agent, engaging/referring appropriate parties as necessary.
  • Meet with the accounts to assess their general management acumen, past experience, work experience of key personnel, depth of organization, and desired work objectives, i.e. credit needs in the future to evaluate the strength of the account versus the level of surety credit requested or provided Corresponds with CPAs, bankers, lawyers, architects, engineers and subcontractors to secure additional underwriting detail, as necessary, to assess risk on preliminary and ongoing basis.
  • Assist in the evaluation of business continuity arrangements and funding mechanisms (such as adequacy of life insurance) to preclude financial drain of customer in the event of the demise of (an) owner or other insurable loss.
  • Assist Surety Accounting in the collection of agency/account overdue accounts receivable, accounting/billing issues as needed.
  • Make recommendations to Manager for proper lines of authority regarding accounts under their responsibility to be submitted to Home Office.
  • Monitor and control utilization of such lines to ensure compliance with guidelines.
  • Perform special projects as assigned including participation in team projects, marketing initiatives, etc.
  • Domestic travel required up to 10%.
  • Telecommuting permitted up to 40%.
Qualifications
Employer will accept a Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Finance, International Business or a related field and five (5) years of experience in the job offered or in a Sr. Surety Underwriter-related occupation.

Position requires demonstrable experience in the following:
  • Marketing, underwriting, and servicing risk for an assigned book of business in a designated geographical area.
  • Demonstrating comprehensive knowledge across the aligned territory and soliciting surety account submissions from assigned producer/customer base via marketing efforts.
  • Independently and effectively calling on all producers/customers to support marketing activities and business plan development.
  • Developing strategies to support producer/customer efforts to increase business activities and submissions.
  • Providing technical expertise and direction to less experienced underwriters and helping maintain underwriting standards of business across the team.
  • Monitoring the quality of underwriting in assigned offices utilizing self-audit processes or other applicable techniques.
  • Evaluating and analyzing new surety obligations and providing management with reporting.
  • Risk assessment and selection.
  • Underwriting process management.
  • Data analysis, interpretation and triangulation.
  • Demonstrated Market knowledge and competitive intelligence.
  • Demonstrated analysis of financial statements and creditworthiness.
  • Prospecting and pipeline management.
  • Domestic travel required up to 10%.
  • Telecommuting permitted up to 40%.
