- Works independently and autonomously (subject to required process oversight).
- Serves as "the" leading technical authority within sub-segment on aligned territory or specific product.
- Seen as "go-to" advisor on subject matter by colleagues within the segment, including by senior underwriting leaders.
- Underwrites policies within underwriting authority.
- Make decisions on whether to accept business by making analytical, data-driven decisions based on data and information provided, including pricing the risk.
- In parts of North America more likely to underwrite complex/unusual policies - or those of high individual line size - policies assessed will focus on those of highest complexity and/or largest size.
- Depending on the part of North America, may hold responsibilities for setting the business plan for portfolio of business.
- Manages portfolio of brokers, agents and clients.
- Leverages market presence and expertise to develop and underwrite profitable business, acting as a representative for Liberty.
- Has relationships with senior/market-leading brokers and/or key agents.
- Plays a leading role in the business and marketing planning process, including advanced data-driven insights from portfolio analysis.
- Serves as a key driver and thought leader for product development and/or refinement for line of business, based on data insights, research and client interaction.
- Participates in highprofile projects across departments designed to drive underwriting and process excellence (e.g., being on a working team).
- Models and facilitates effective collaboration across teams, stakeholders and partners (e.g., UW Support, Claims, Actuarial, Directors of Underwriting in GRSNA).
- Shares knowledge based on technical expertise, including providing external thought-leadership.
- Acts as an exemplary mentor, coach, and trainer for other underwriters and internal partners; supports developing and delivering technical training based on technical expertise.
- Acts as a point of escalation on particularly tricky or novel underwriting decisions.
- Strong knowledge of key legal cases, legislation and regulation impacting area(s) of underwriting expertise.
- Domestic travel required up to 25%.
- Telecommuting permitted up to 60%.
Employer will accept a Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Risk Management, Law, Legal Studies or related field and 10 years of experience in the job offered or in a Senior Executive Underwriter-related occupation.
Position requires demonstrable experience in the following:
- Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility and across product line or territory.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information.
- Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external partners.
- Demonstrated comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues.
- Defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes or workflows to properly manage or administer complex technical underwriting issues.
- Developing and underwriting profitable business.
- Assess, price and underwrite for coverages complex casualty risk for lead and excess positions.
- Review insurance contracts and carrier documents to evaluate for appropriateness to sit over in an excess or lead position.
- Negotiate effectively with broker partners in both soliciting new business and retaining renewals.
- Document underwriting rationale or thought process in a timely fashion.
- Pipeline new business both lead and excess as a means of both soliciting new accounts and collaborating with internal stakeholders including risk management.
- Domestic travel required up to 25%.
- Telecommuting permitted up to 60%.
