The Role
As a System Administrator at Kyndryl, you'll solve complex problems and identify potential future issues across the spectrum of platforms and services. You'll be at the forefront of new technology and modernization, working with some of our biggest clients - which means some of the biggest in the world.
There's never a typical day as a System Administrator at Kyndryl, because no two projects are alike. You'll be managing systems data for clients and providing day-to-day solutions and security compliance. You'll oversee a queue of assignments and work directly with technicians, prioritizing tickets to deliver the best solutions to our clients.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
- At least five years of experience overseeing Mainframe Performance & Capacity Management, with demonstrated skills in the areas below:
- Strong grasp of mainframe operating systems like z/OS, OS/390, or similar.
- Knowledge of essential components such as JES2/JES3, VTAM, DB2, CICS, MQ, and more.
- IBM RMF (Resource Measurement Facility) to gather and report system performance data.
- IBM SMF (System Management Facility) for collecting comprehensive system activity details.
- SDSF (System Display and Search Facility) for monitoring job flow and system health.
- Omegamon (Broadcom) for real-time monitoring and alerts.
- MainView (BMC), a widely used suite for performance monitoring.
- Ability to analyze metrics like CPU usage, I/O activity, paging rates, workload trends, and memory usage.
- Skilled in reviewing historical performance data to predict future resource requirements accurately.
- Deep knowledge in planning expansions for CPU, memory, DASD (disk storage), and network capacity.
- Able to create capacity plans and present infrastructure upgrade or resource reallocation proposals.
- Expertise in spotting and resolving system and application-level performance bottlenecks.
- Proficient in optimizing parameters, workloads, and subsystems such as DB2 and CICS for best performance.
- Effective collaborator with applications and systems programmers to tackle complex performance problems.
- Thorough understanding of workload management (WLM) and implementing its policies.
- Experience managing job priorities, scheduling, and distributing resources efficiently.
- Proficiency in balancing batch and online transaction workloads for optimal system use.
- Ability to extract, review, and create reports from SMF records to gain insights into system and workload performance.
- Skilled at using IFASMFDP, IBM Tivoli, or custom scripts for advanced SMF data processing.
- Capable of preparing detailed performance and capacity reports for management.
- Meticulously document all findings, suggestions, and changes in the system environment.
- Quickly identify and resolve performance drops or capacity issues, working closely with infrastructure, network, and app teams for root cause analysis.
- Use scripting languages like REXX, CLIST, or shell scripts to automate how data is collected and reported.
- Excellent at explaining technical information clearly to business stakeholders.
- Promote teamwork across various groups, including systems programmers, DBAs, network admins, and application developers.
Preferred Technical and Professional Experience
- Familiarity with z/OS automation tools, such as IBM Automation Control for z/OS.
- Background supporting Mainframe Cloud and Hybrid setups.
- Understanding of security practices to ensure compliance during performance monitoring.
- Exposure to DevOps approaches to integrate performance monitoring with development workflows.
