The Role
Key Responsibilities
DB2/IMS Application & System Support
- Provide day‑to‑day support for DB2 and IMS applications, system environments, and runtime components.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve issues related to application execution, database access, SQL performance, and system behaviors.
- Assist with IMS transaction and database structures where needed.
Application Team Consulting & Execution Planning
- Work closely with application teams to plan and validate deployments, schema changes, SQL modifications, and new application rollouts.
- Provide guidance on DB2 application design practices, coding standards, and efficient use of database objects.
- Participate in design reviews and contribute to improving application reliability and database efficiency.
DB2 Application Design & Database Objects
- Support and review the creation, modification, and maintenance of DB2 database objects (tables, indexes, views, tablespaces, buffer pools).
- Ensure correct design for performance, normalization, partitioning, and data access strategies.
- Assist with bind packages, plans, and dependency management.
Scripting & Development Support
- Use SQL, COBOL, REXX, JCL, and Python to debug, automate, or enhance DB2/IMS application workflows.
- Build REXX or Python tools/utilities to automate analysis, validate SQL packages, or assist with deployment readiness.
- Support batch jobs through JCL updates, procedure management, and DB2 utility execution.
Deployment, Testing & Production Support
- Assist in build & deploy processes involving DB2 schema/DDL changes, IMS definitions, and database utilities.
- Support test cycles by validating SQL performance, execution plans, and application behavior.
- Provide production-level support to resolve incidents and ensure applications meet SLAs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- 12+ years experience supporting DB2 or IMS applications in large mainframe environments.
- Strong knowledge of:
- DB2 application design and database object structures
- SQL development and tuning
- COBOL and REXX programming
- JCL for batch job creation/maintenance
- Python scripting (for automation and validation)
- Experience consulting with application teams on design, performance, deployment, and execution.
- Good understanding of z/OS operational concepts, file systems, datasets, and batch scheduling.
Preferred / Nice to Have
- Familiarity with DB2 utilities (REORG, LOAD, RUNSTATS, COPY, RECOVER).
- Experience with IMS subsystems (IMS DB, IMS TM, DBRC).
- Exposure to performance tools (Omegamon, MainView for DB2/IMS).
- Understanding of buffer pool tuning concepts, SQL explain plans, and cost factors.

- High ownership, attention to detail, and structured documentation style.
- Ability to translate complex DB2/IMS technical details into guidance for developers.
