Merchant Services Tax Operations - Client Tax Associate I

As a Merchant Services Client Tax Associate within one of the world's leading merchant acquirers, you will support tax reporting, compliance, and process improvement initiatives. You will monitor compliance with tax regulations, assist with federal and state tax filings, and respond to tax compliance inquiries. Your role involves participating in projects by drafting requirements, preparing test data, and conducting data accuracy reviews. You will draft job aids, implement process improvements, and serve as a subject matter expert for testing responsibilities. Additionally, you will create and deliver reports using Excel, PowerPoint, and Tableau, and assist with automation and maintenance of reporting processes. You will provide guidance to various teams to support customer inquiries and monitor tax requirements and operational impacts. Your responsibilities include coordinating deliverables, assessing impacts of changes, and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure effective change implementation. You will utilize project management tools to track and report on change initiatives, providing clear documentation and updates.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Monitor compliance with domestic and international tax information reporting/withholding regulations. Support annual filing of Federal tax forms (1099K, 1099C, 1099MISC, 1042-S) and quarterly state filings.
  • Assist with annual B notice solicitation and backup withholding reporting and payment processes. Respond to tax compliance inquiries from operations, technology, internal service providers, and client-facing groups. Identify and research tax reporting or compliance issues.
  • Participate in multiple projects by drafting business requirements, test planning, preparing test data, executing test cases, and performing reconciliation. Develop quality procedures, conduct data accuracy reviews, and communicate findings to management and stakeholders.
  • Draft job aids for new processes or updates to existing procedures. Implement process improvements, monitor process controls, and perform data integrity checks.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for testing/validation responsibilities across teams. Create and deliver daily, weekly, and monthly reporting using Excel, PowerPoint, and Tableau.
  • Monitor tax form production, including form validation and reconciliation. Assist with automation, enhancement, and maintenance of reporting, analysis, and reconciliation processes.
  • Provide guidance to Sales, Customer Service, Account Executives, and Partner Channel to support their responses to customer questions or requests for accurate/updated tax documentation.
  • Support business product initiatives to monitor tax requirements, tax functionality, and operational process impacts.
  • Coordinate deliverables with business units and lines of business.
  • Identify, assess, and size the impacts of potential changes affecting Merchant Services business, systems, and compliance. Recognize and communicate the implications of regulatory, operational, and technology changes on tax reporting and business processes.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure effective change implementation and minimize risk to compliance and operations. Utilize JIRA and other project management systems and tools to track, manage, and report on change initiatives, issues, and resolutions. Provide clear documentation and updates on change management activities to management and relevant teams.

Required qualifications, skills and capabilities

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in the consumer financial services industry or relevant tax, financial analysis, or technical product experience.
  • Experience participating in process improvement/project initiatives, including business requirements and script writing.
  • Proficient in MS Excel, Project, Access, and Word.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret data and its impact on business operations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to track and execute multiple tasks simultaneously with strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface positively with other departments, colleagues, senior management, and external clients.
  • Controls and risk management aptitude.
  • Excellent multitasking and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, results-driven environment.

Preferred qualifications, skills and capabilities

  • Experience with Merchant Services operations or other payment processing operations.
  • Experience with Merchant Services systems such as PeopleSoft, TDOR, CBO, Payments Admin, Commerce Center, Party Central, Taxport, and Snowflake.
  • Experience resolving defects with IT partners, including SQL/code understanding and JIRA.
  • Experience with AI tools such as Alteryx, UiPath, or Tableau.
  • Knowledge of operations and controls of various financial systems and software applications, and the ability to extract/utilize information from these systems.
  • Experience in process improvement and process mapping.
