Summary:

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) advances scientific discovery and education in the life sciences. The Technology & Systems Management (TSM) team enables that mission by delivering secure, reliable, and forward-looking enterprise technology capabilities across a complex, distributed environment.

HHMI seeks a Senior Director, Technology Solutions & Integrations to lead the strategy, architecture, governance, and evolution of the Institute's core enterprise platforms and integrations.

The Senior Director serves as the Institute owner of HHMI's core business systems and the data integrations and digital services that connect them. This role defines long-term technology strategy and ensures enterprise systems advance operational effectiveness, data integrity, and user experience in alignment with institutional priorities.

As a strategic partner to scientific and operational leadership, the Senior Director translates complex institutional requirements into cohesive, multi-year roadmaps that strengthen organizational capability. The role leads a multidisciplinary team responsible for enterprise applications, integration architecture, reporting intelligence, and platform optimization, and collaborates with HHMI's EverydayAI team to thoughtfully incorporate AI-enabled capabilities within enterprise systems.

This position reports to the Chief Technology Officer and is based at HHMI's headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland. It follows a hybrid schedule with three in-office days per week and will have occasional travel to our Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, VA.

What You'll Do:

  • Provide strategic direction for the design, delivery, and integration of enterprise technology solutions supporting administrative and programmatic operations.


  • Serve as a senior technology advisor to leaders across Scientific Programs, Janelia Research, Investments, People & Culture, Finance, Communications, and Operations - building trusted relationships and ensuring solutions meet a wide range of often evolving needs.


  • Translate institutional priorities into actionable technology strategies and multi-year roadmaps.


  • Oversee HHMI's enterprise applications portfolio, including Workday, Ariba, Concur, and other systems that support core operational processes.


  • Drive continuous improvement in business architecture, system configuration, release management, and production support practices.


  • Direct secure and reliable data integrations across enterprise systems in collaboration with data governance and cybersecurity partners.


  • Provide strategic guidance on the analytics and reporting applications to meet Institute needs and priorities.


  • Lead intake, prioritization, and resource allocation across competing institutional initiatives.


  • Establish governance frameworks, monitor performance metrics, and report on service delivery and business value to TSM and institutional leadership.


  • Lead and develop a multidisciplinary team of leaders, developers, integrators, and analysts, fostering a high-performing and collaborative environment.


  • Manage multi-million dollar operating and project budgets, vendor relationships, and service contracts.


  • Guide modernization efforts, including evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies and AI-enabled capabilities.


  • Define and track key performance indicators, service level agreements, and delivery metrics to measure team effectiveness, stakeholder satisfaction, and the business value of technology investments.

What You Bring:

Education

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent and extensive related project experience

Experience

  • 15+ years of progressive leadership experience in enterprise technology environments, including senior-level oversight of SaaS-based ERP platforms.


  • 7+ years managing complex, cross-functional initiatives and resources that include managing resources within and outside own area; must be an influential and effective system delivery manager.


  • Senior management experience in long-range planning, organizational leadership, and enterprise program delivery.


  • Experience leading multidisciplinary, high-performance teams.


  • Experience applying systems thinking and Agile methodologies.

Skills & Expertise

  • Deep knowledge of enterprise business process design, systems architecture, and organizational structure.


  • Experience with integrated ERP platforms (Workday preferred) and cloud-based SaaS solutions across HR, Financials, Procurement, and Travel & Expense.


  • Strong understanding of data integration, workflow design, and business process management tools.


  • Demonstrated leadership in enterprise change management, guiding complex system and process transformations across diverse stakeholder groups.


  • Familiarity with the evolving AI landscape, including piloting SaaS-based AI capabilities


  • Strong analytical capability to diagnose complex, cross-environment issues and align resources to deliver sustainable solutions.


  • Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders, build trust, and drive alignment across complex environments


  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and problem-solving skills


  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and manage sensitive information

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. Compensation Range
$242,100.80 (minimum) - $302,626.00 (midpoint) - $393,413.80 (maximum)

Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal consistency when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
