The Flavell Lab at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts is seeking a Research Technician to join our team. Our lab studies how neural circuits generate complex behaviors in freely behaving animals using computational analysis, deep learning, and calcium imaging-based approaches. We work primarily with the model system C. elegans and apply both computational and experimental methods to uncover fundamental principles of brain function. For more information about the Flavell Lab, please visit: Steven - Flavell Lab

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and creative researcher to participate in computational analysis and modeling of population neural activity. The goal of this work is to understand how neural circuits drive behaviors such as navigation and state-dependent responses. This role involves deep learning-based data processing of calcium imaging recordings, high-dimensional data analysis, and computational modeling that links neural activity to behavior. For interested candidates, there is also an optional opportunity to participate in wet-lab imaging experiments. This position is designed for someone excited about contributing original scientific insights rather than performing routine or procedural tasks.

Application Instructions

To apply, please submit your resume with your GPA clearly listed at the top. Applicants should also include 2-3 professional or academic references.

What We Provide

  • Hands-on experience in a dynamic and immersive research environment.
  • Opportunities for authorship on scientific publications.
  • Direct mentorship and formalized professional development support.
  • Conference participation, including attendance at national and internal scientific meetings.
  • Extensive practice with public speaking through lab meetings, presentations, and collaborative discussions.
  • Additional technical training that strengthens readiness for advanced research roles or positions in industry.
  • A supportive and collaborative team committed to fostering your growth as a researcher.

What You'll Do

  • Process calcium imaging data using GPU-based software packages, custom-trained neural networks, and related tools.
  • Analyze and interpret high-dimensional neural datasets using systems neuroscience approaches such as neural networks, Bayesian inference, and decoding/encoding methods.
  • (Optional) Conduct in vivo calcium imaging experiments in C. elegans to study how neural circuits generate behavior.
  • Engage in creative, hypothesis-driven research contributing to lab discoveries and broader neuroscience insights.
  • Assist with lab management, organization, equipment maintenance, and safety compliance.
