Research in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Summers at the University of Maryland Baltimore County's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry focuses on understanding how HIV-1 and other retroviruses assemble in infected cells and selectively package their RNA genomes. More information about the lab and their work can be found by visiting https://www.hhmi.umbc.edu.
About the Postdoctoral Scientist role:
We are seeking a motivated and creative Postdoctoral Scientist to join our dynamic team exploring how HIV-1 selectively packages it's dimeric, unspliced RNA genome. Individuals with experience in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), or other biophysical and molecular biology techniques are particularly encouraged to apply. This individual will meet regularly with Dr. Summers to discuss strategy, analyze results, and write and publish manuscripts on their findings. They will also be responsible for directing and mentoring a team of undergraduates who will contribute to these studies. The individual can expect to spend 90% of their time on these activities, which can be roughly broken down as 70% independent research, 10% research/mentoring with undergraduates, and 10% analysis/writing. They will also advise and mentor graduate students in the laboratory who will be conducting their own parallel but independent studies (5% effort), and will participate in departmental seminar, lab retreats and national/international conferences (5%). The individual will use modern molecular biology and in vitro transcription methods to prepare RNAs and proteins for structural and mechanistic studies. Mentoring and resources will be provided to help the individual develop an independent research program and to facilitate the transition to an academic position.
