R&D Modelling and Simulation Engineer (Edge Solutions, BESS) - IDC
The Opportunity:
As a Modelling and Simulation Engineer, you provide product and solution-oriented system level modelling expertise for Battery Energy Storage Systems within GPQSS.
The role focuses on integrating OEM provided models into standardized system level templates and on delivering validated BESS solution modelling packages from an application and grid integration perspective.
Your primary objective is to enable the organization by providing high quality, validated reference models, solution templates, and technical guidance, supporting tendering, execution, and local engineering teams. Project specific grid studies are typically performed by dedicated system study teams, with this role providing methodology, valida-tion, and expert support where required.
The primary goal of this role is to deliver high quality, validated modelling packages and solution templates that act as kick starters for tendering and project execution.
How You Will Make an Impact
• Act as the system level modelling and simulation Subject Matter Expert for GPQSS Battery Energy Storage Systems.
• Provide independent technical judgment on model selection, fidelity, assumptions, and applicability to BESS solutions.
• Ensure modelling approaches correctly represent overall system behaviour, performance, and limitations from an application perspective.
• Serve as technical reference and escalation point for modelling related topics across GPQSS.
• Integrate OEM provided models (PCS, battery, control systems) into standardized GPQSS system level tem-plates.
• Develop, maintain, and validate reference BESS models and solution packages for RMS and EMT simula-tions.
• Execute solution validation studies to assess BESS performance, robustness, and compliance from an ap-plication and grid interaction perspective.

• Deliver validated modelling packages intended as kick starters for tendering and project execution.
• Provide methodology, validated models, and expert support to teams performing project specific grid and system studies.
• Technically steer and enable external consultants, Power Consultants, and project engineers to effectively use GPQSS modelling packages.
• Support tendering and feasibility phases through interpretation of simulation results and clarification of mod-elling assumptions.
• Support grid code compliance assessments by providing reference models and validation frameworks, not by executing full project studies.
• Prepare and deliver training, documentation, and guidance on BESS modelling approaches, tools, and best practices.
• Capture and disseminate lessons learned to continuously improve modelling templates and solution pack-ages.
• Contribute to cross disciplinary alignment with System Architect, AC BoS, Battery Technology, and Automa-tion roles.
Your background:
• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or equivalent.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in power system modelling and simulation.
• Excellent knowledge of EMT and RMS simulation tools, with mandatory proficiency in PSCAD and DIg-SILENT PowerFactory.
• Proven experience integrating OEM models into system-level simulation environments.
• Proven ability to develop reusable modelling assets and support multiple stakeholders, beyond single pro-ject execution.
• Solid understanding of power system dynamics, inverter-based resources, and BESS grid integration.
• Ability to independently drive end-to-end modelling and simulation activities.
• Strong collaboration skills in multidisciplinary and international teams.
• Excellent communication skills in English.
• Experience with PSS®E for large-scale transmission or regional power system studies.
• Experience with simulation automation or scripting (Python, MATLAB).
• Exposure to grid impact studies and grid-code validation processes.
• Experience working with external consultants, utilities, or TSOs.
