R&D Engineer, Short‑Circuit Performance (Power Transformers)
Your role
As an R&D Engineer specializing in short-circuit Performance, you will be part of Hitachi Energy's Power Transformers R&D organization, where you will develop your technical expertise and grow towards becoming a recognized contributor in short-circuit design and analysis.
You will work closely with experienced engineers and global experts, contributing to the reliability and robustness of power transformers used worldwide. In this global role, you will combine analytical work, simulations, experimental activities, and collaboration with factories worldwide, offering a strong foundation for long-term technical development within R&D.
How you'll make an impact
- Develop expertise in Hitachi Power Transformer short-circuit design, supported by senior engineers and established methodologies.
- Contribute to improving the reliability and resilience of power transformers by working with short-circuit behavior, design methods, and applicable international standards.
- Perform studies and finite element simulations to analyze stresses and dynamic behavior of transformer components during short-circuit events.
- Apply and build understanding of short-circuit currents, electromagnetic forces, and resulting dynamic mechanical forces and stresses within transformer structures.
- Participate in experimental and validation activities, such as material testing and prototype testing, to support analytical and simulation work.
- Contribute to the development and improvement of design tools and design rules related to short-circuit performance.
- Develop competence and expertise by learning Dynamic short-circuit behavior, Acoustic performance and vibration, and mechanical designs to improving reliability and resilience of power transformers Support transformer factories in special or non-standard designs, contributing to short-circuit design assessments under guidance.
- Collaborate with the global Power Transformers R&D team, the Hitachi Energy Research team in Västerås, transformer factories worldwide, and universities.
- Actively support and promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the R&D organization.

Your background
- University degree (BSc or MSc) in Applied Physics preferably, but Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or a related field are also considered.
- Understanding of, or strong interest in, short-circuit phenomena, including electromagnetic forces, mechanical stresses, and dynamic system behavior.
- Experience or academic exposure to finite element analysis (FEA) for structural, electromagnetic, and/or dynamic problems.
- Experience from power transformers, electrical machines, or heavy electromechanical equipment is beneficial but not required.
- Ability to learn complex technical topics and develop within a structured R&D environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional and international teams.
- A structured and curious mindset, with motivation to improve tools, methods, and technical solutions over time.
- Good communication skills and fluency in English, both written and spoken. Swedish is an advantage.
