AT Hatch
Hatch

Senior Data Scientist

Remote
Our mission is to help small businesses start and grow. We are building financial products that empower business owners and enable them to focus on their products and on growing their businesses. At Hatch we care about creating solutions which provide accessible, transparent, and fair access to financial products. Our team is spread across the US and Canada, with a physical  office in San Francisco and more opening around the country soon. Our company is growing and we’d love for you to grow with us!

Opportunity
As one of the first Data Scientists at Hatch, you will help set the foundations for the data team. You will engineer features, build, train, test, evaluate, and implement models, interpret data, analyze results, build dashboards and reports, and provide actionable insights and conclusions in order to support teams cross-functionally. This will be a high visibility role that will add significant value to every part of our company to support our goal of helping small business owners (SMBs) scale and grow.

Data and Analytics
The data Team at Hatch is small, but strong and expanding quickly. We use Python and SQL to deep dive into data while using various other technologies to investigate further if needed. The company uses Segment, Fivetran, and Mode for data instrumentation, and business analytics (but we’re always evaluating new vendors).

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 5+ years working experience as a Data Scientist, Data Analyst, Business Data Analyst, or in another relevant role
  • Experience building and implementing production-facing machine learning models
  • Experience in designing and building out foundational Data Science infrastructure and tooling
  • Strong knowledge of and experience with databases and query languages (SQL, etc.), as well as familiarity with scripting languages to analyze data and build models (e.g. Python, Julia, R)
  • Experience building Business Intelligence dashboards and reports, as well as working with cross-functional stakeholders
  • The ability to work and thrive in a small group: strong communication, collaboration, and empathy

You will succeed in this role if you:

  • Have experience working with cross-functional teams to implement strategies and provide recommendations based on data findings
  • Have strong analytical, relationship and project management skills for driving a variety of programs
  • Have experience with analyzing and conducting hypothesis driven experimentation
  • Demonstrate resourcefulness and comfort with ambiguity—we won't know the answers to everything, but we'll figure it out together

  • We’d love to have you apply, even if you feel unsure about whether you meet every single requirement in this posting

What You Can Expect
You can expect to familiarize yourself with our databases, tables, and your team in the first week. You can expect to work directly with the Data and Engineering teams on a daily basis, and partner with your lead to help you if you get stuck. You can also expect to get a good grasp on understanding our users, how Hatch works and how small business banking and credit also work!

After one month, you should be able to engineer features, train and test models for a variety of business applications (e.g. credit underwriting, fraud detection, growth), as well as be able to deliver meaningful metrics, reports, and data visualizations to different stakeholders and for a variety of teams/departments.

We’ll have a collaborative team session to go through your code and model/analysis. By the end of your second month, you should feel empowered to improve internal processes and models to drive efficiency and increase conversion rates. By this time you’ll also be owning and tackling problems from inception to implementation.
