Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ) - a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York - seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Dance Specialist to support our K-12 programming.
The Karate Specialist will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children's Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.
The Karate Specialist will support our wellness and social development curriculum for students K-12.

- Must have at least 2 years karate teaching experience
Who you are
- A commitment to Youth Development and the mission and programs of HCZ
- Martial Arts training
- Passion and experience with arts education, particularly involving K-12 school-aged youth.
- Flexibility, creativity, and enthusiasm for young people
- Excellent planning, organization, communication, and time management skills
- Ability to provide consistent and positive instruction as well as receive constructive criticism.
- Experience working in youth development with K-12 school youth and teaching well-developed martial arts courses, social consciousness, self-identity, and efficacy.
- Energetic, motivated self-starter and a team player
- Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively on projects with staff and students and full curriculum.
What you'll do
- Develop, implement, and revise curriculum, including lesson planning, instructional techniques, and behavioral management
- Ability to communicate the progress of students and share insights discovered with team members on a regular basis
- Provide martial arts instruction to groups of children and adults
- Act as a role model for K-12 students
- Teaching students about the history and philosophy of martial arts, including karate, judo, tae kwon do, and more
- Promoting a safe environment for students to learn physical self-defense skills and develop confidence
- Helping students develop good posture and form while performing karate techniques
- Evaluating student progress, making adjustments to lessons as needed, and giving feedback to students
- Teaching students basic self-defense skills such as blocking punches or kicks using hands and feet, and breaking falls with knees or elbows
- Assigning drills and exercises for students to practice at home
- Demonstrating proper use of equipment and safety procedures during class
- Create a training program for any class level, including elementary, intermediate, and elite.
- Attend weekly staff meetings
- Perform other duties as assigned
