Summary:

The Vice President of Subsidiary Rights will oversee and manage the subsidiary rights division within Hachette Book Group. This role is responsible for maximizing revenue through the sale of rights, including foreign language translation, audio, film, and television adaptations. The VP will collaborate closely with authors, agents, and internal teams to develop strategic initiatives that enhance the company's rights portfolio.

This candidate will be responsible for driving sales and setting direction for a team of Subsidiary Rights professionals, responsible for domestic and foreign rights across both the adult and children's markets. The ideal candidate will have a track record in growing rights sales innovatively, leading teams, as well as knowledge of rights and positioning of a range of titles in the international marketplace. This person will have excellent customer relationships and the ability to foster positive and productive cross-functional relationships with publishers and our larger organization. Crucially, the candidate will have a deep knowledge of selling rights across and a sound understanding of the needs of each market.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Rights Management:
    • Develop and implement strategies for the acquisition and licensing of subsidiary rights.
    • Negotiate contracts and agreements with foreign publishers, film producers, and other entities seeking rights.
    • Maintain and grow relationships with literary agents and rights holders.
    • Identify potential Subrights opportunities and lead the team in developing and making presentations to potential clients.
    • Negotiate and sell domestic and foreign rights.
    • Sell at domestic and international book fairs and attend other company events


  • Market Analysis:
    • Conduct market research to identify trends and opportunities in subsidiary rights.
    • Analyze sales data to track performance and forecast potential revenue from rights sales.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Lead and mentor a team of rights professionals, providing guidance and support in their roles.
    • Foster a collaborative and productive team environment, encouraging innovative approaches to rights sales.
  • Collaboration:
    • Work closely with editorial, sales, and marketing teams to ensure alignment on rights opportunities and initiatives.
    • Communicate effectively with authors regarding rights opportunities and potential sales.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in publishing, with a strong focus on subsidiary rights.
  • Proven track record of successful rights negotiations and sales.
  • Strong negotiation and contract management skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
  • Knowledge of publishing industry trends and market dynamics.
  • Proficiency in rights management systems and tools.
  • Strategic thinker with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Passionate about books and literature, with a keen understanding of the publishing landscape.
  • Strong leadership skills with a track record of building and managing teams.
  • Ability to provide a vision and strategic direction for the subsidiary rights business, with a focus on growing sales.
  • Deep knowledge of selling rights, particularly foreign rights, and licensing.
  • Expert knowledge of book production, timing for run-ons, pricing, shipping, billing.
  • Ability to travel.

The compensation range for this position is $200,000-$220,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location - talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
