Senior Vice President (SVP), Commercial Operations
Summary:
The SVP, Commercial Operations is a senior executive position responsible for optimizing and scaling the ongoing commercial success of Hachette Book Group (HBG). Reporting directly to the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, this role will drive operational excellence across sales, operations, marketing, IT, and other cross-functional departments, including publishing.
The role requires deep understanding of the publishing ecosystem. This executive will play a key role in modernizing systems, elevating decision-making, and equipping the organization to achieve ambitious revenue and growth targets.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Commercial Leadership & Growth
- Partner with the Deputy CEO to create a cohesive commercial operations roadmap.
- Serve as a senior advisor to the Deputy CEO and Executive Management Team on commercial performance, operational risks, and growth opportunities.
- Take a leading role in making HBG the industry's most polished and profitable performer, providing group level focused commercial management.
- Lead key cross-functional projects across HBG, e.g. data improvements/system enhancements/cost-savings or controls/margin improvements and manage relationships between key stakeholders, central departments, and publishing.
- Align with Editorial, Publishing, Sales, Marketing, IT, Finance, and Operations to help find opportunities for improvement and growth, removing friction and barriers and finding efficiencies and new ways of working.
- Seek opportunities to optimize workflows, data availability and other decision-making tools and performance dashboards.
- Work with sales and operation to seek ways to maximize margin and profit, including refinement of pricing strategies across formats, markets, and distribution channels.
- Act in high-level liaison role between sales, marketing, operations and other teams as internal HBG 'brand ambassador' for major authors, starting with James Patterson, ensuring excellent communication to his team and aiding in ongoing sales growth.
- Lead the partnership with HBG joint venture, Kadokawa/Yen Press.
- Act as internal HBG lead/liaison with client publishers.
- Work with other Hachette companies, particularly Hachette UK, to seek out efficiencies and more effective ways of working together.
Analytics & Business Intelligence
- Work closely with IT, analytics, sales, and other departments in further developing a data-driven culture, including improvements to existing systems, data quality, and dashboards to help inform commercial and publishing decisions, demand planning, and revenue strategy.
- Work with Inventory, Operations, and Distribution to optimize inventory planning for maximum margin and global availability.
- Oversee metadata and the creation of discoverability strategies in collaboration with relevant HBG teams.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Bachelor's degree required; MBA or relevant advanced degree preferred.
- 15+ years of commercial, revenue operations, or sales operations experience within publishing, media, or related content industries.
- Deep knowledge of sales, operations, and distribution models, and digital content ecosystems.
- Proven track record modernizing commercial operations and implementing scalable systems.
- Strategic, analytical, and operationally rigorous.
- Excellent communicator with executive-level influencing skills.
- Strong command of CRM, ERP/title management systems, and analytics tools.
- High financial acumen with experience in forecasting, pricing, and revenue modelling.
- Comfortable leading transformation in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment.
The role is NYC based and requires a minimum of three days in the office per week.

The compensation for this position is $275,000-$325,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location - talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
