Job Description

Transformer Electrical Design Engineer - HVDC

Location: Stafford, England, United Kingdom | Onsite (please confirm hybrid availability with recruiter) Employment Type: Full Time | 37 hours per week | Permanent Job ID: R5045413

Design the Electrical Heart of World-Class HVDC Transformers

Transformers sit at the core of every HVDC system - and the quality of their electrical design determines everything from performance and efficiency to safety and long-term reliability. As a Transformer Electrical Design Engineer within GE Vernova's HVDC Solution Line in Stafford, you'll take ownership of the complete electrical design package for High Voltage Alternating Current (HVAC) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transformers - applying your expertise in active part design, insulation engineering, and simulation to deliver designs that are safe, cost-competitive, and built to last.

This is a technically focused, specialist role for an engineer who finds genuine satisfaction in solving complex electromagnetic and insulation design challenges - and who wants their work to contribute directly to the energy transition at a global scale.

What You'll Do

  • Deliver complete transformer electrical design packages - prepare and own the full electrical design package to IEC 60076 (Power Transformers) standards, including calculations, simulation tool outputs, and manufacturing instructions for transformer windings; review and approve engineering drawings; and ensure designs are delivered on time, right first time, and within budget.
  • Select and evaluate components - evaluate technical specifications and perform component selection across key transformer sub-systems including bushings, tap changers, current transformers (CTs), and cooling equipment; raise and manage technical queries with customers, project managers, and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Develop test programmes - generate test schedules for Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) covering both routine and type testing requirements, ensuring traceability to design intent and IEC 60076 / IEEE C57 standards.
  • Support tendering and risk management - contribute to tender activities by developing cost-competitive, high-quality design solutions; identify high-risk areas of the design early and provide clear mitigation actions.
  • Engage with customers and project teams - participate in design reviews and customer meetings, including occasional travel (less than once per year); communicate technical information clearly to both internal and external audiences.

Who We're Looking For

You're a specialist transformer electrical engineer with hands-on experience in active part design - someone who combines technical rigour with practical engineering judgement and a genuine curiosity for how electromagnetic systems behave.

Required

  • A formal education in Electrical Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline provides a strong foundation for this role; however, we are most interested in your total experience and professional achievements.
  • Proven knowledge of transformer electrical design, with particular depth in active part design including lead exits, insulation systems, windings and nesting, and core and clamping structures.
  • Working knowledge of IEC 60076 and/or IEEE C57 standards for power transformer design and testing.
  • Experience using Finite Element Modelling (FEM) tools for electromagnetic or thermal analysis in a transformer design context.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation including design calculations, manufacturing instructions, and engineering drawings.

Preferred

  • Experience applying Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) methodology in a transformer or high-voltage equipment design environment.
  • Familiarity with document management and Product Data Management (PDM) systems such as Innotec Imagine, PTC Windchill, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or 3D modelling tools for transformer component design.
  • Exposure to HVDC transformer design or high-voltage direct current system requirements.
