Job Description Summary

The Technical Lead is responsible for the technical leadership and coordination of control and protection engineering activities for high-voltage substation projects. This role ensures that all technical solutions are compliant with client specifications, industry standards, and system requirements. The Technical Lead supports project teams by defining engineering strategies, validating technical designs, and guiding engineers throughout the project lifecycle from design to commissioning.

Job Description

Missions and objectives

  • Provide technical leadership for control and protection systems in high-voltage substation projects.
  • Define and validate protection philosophies, control architectures, and substation automation concepts.
  • Lead and coordinate the engineering team responsible for protection schemes, relay settings, control logic, and communication interfaces.
  • Review and approve technical documentation such as protection schemes, single-line diagrams, control and wiring diagrams, relay configuration files, and testing procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable standards and regulations (e.g., IEC standards, grid codes, utility specifications).
  • Support integration of protection relays, IEDs, RTUs, and SCADA systems, including communication protocols such as IEC 61850.
  • Provide technical support during Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), and commissioning activities.
  • Identify technical risks and propose mitigation solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Act as the main technical interface with clients, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
  • Support the Project Manager in technical planning, cost estimation, and resource allocation.

Project Execution

  • Collect technical data from customers, or in customer's specifications get during tendering phase
  • Visit customer substations for collection of data when useful
  • Draw up following technical documents/files : IO list, Protection logic diagram, architecture, hardware specification, cubicle specification + other requested technical documents requested for the project and manage technical discussions/validation with customer
  • Support Engineering team for development of DCS system specification, HMI principles specification and/or HMI detailed views specification and manage technical discussions/validation with customer
  • Draw up PREFAT, FAT and SAT functional test sheets and manage technical discussions/validation with customer
  • Support Project Manager for draw up of FAT program & procedure
  • Assist engineering team and/or subcontractor for draw up of wiring diagrams and lay-out f cubicles
  • Check and validate wiring diagrams en lay-out of cubicles and manage technical discussions/validation with customer
  • Assist Services team during PREFAT, FAT and SAT

Technical support for commercial and Tendering teams

  • Assist commercial and Tendering team to define technical offers (technical solution, type of equipment...)
  • Estimate time necessary for Study part
  • Assist commercial and Tendering team during meetings with customer during tendering phase

Participate activelly to EHS culture

  • Participate to trainings related to PM function
  • Organize ans participate to potential Team Safety Visit put in place for managed project
  • Participate to Hierachical Safety Visit (in GEV premises or on customer sites)
  • Participate to internal GEV meetings
  • Wear PPE following GEV instructions
  • Report to Management any EHS deviations/near miss/incident/accident
  • Promote strict respect of GEV EHS rules and instructions

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline

Skills

  • Knowledge in high-voltage substation protection and control systems.
  • Knowledge of protection relays, protection schemes (distance, differential, overcurrent, busbar protection, etc.), and substation automation systems.
  • Understanding of communication protocols and standards used in substations (e.g., IEC 61850, IEC 60870-5-104, Modbus).
  • Experience reviewing and validating engineering documentation and technical designs.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Fluent in Dutch & English; additional languages are an asset.
  • VCA certified
  • Driver's licence

Experience

  • Experience working on transmission or distribution substation projects for utilities, TSOs, or EPC contractors.
  • Experience with substation automation systems.
  • Familiarity with control and protection relay configuration tools
