Job Description

Location: Remote, U.S. only
Travel: Up to 20%, including occasional international travel
License Requirement: Professional Engineering license in the United States (or demonstrating his/her plan to get PE license within a certain period) and willing to review and seal your work and the work of others under your supervision.

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Project Engineer to lead the engineering execution of high-voltage substation projects for electric utilities and renewable energy applications. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineering leader who brings deep expertise in outdoor physical substation design, thrives in a project environment, and can confidently serve as the technical point of contact for both customers and internal teams.

You will be responsible for the successful delivery of engineering scope across the full project lifecycle - from design development and technical coordination through risk management, quality assurance, and customer interface. The ideal candidate combines strong technical depth in AIS/GIS substations with the leadership skills needed to guide multidisciplinary engineering teams and support project execution.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Lead engineering activities for assigned substation projects, including:
    • schedule development and updates
    • design safety
    • planning and tracking design reviews
    • design optimization
    • on-time delivery
    • risk management
    • quality assurance and quality control
  • Perform and/or lead the complete HV physical outdoor design of substations, including:
    • arrangement of high-voltage equipment
    • layout of LV/MV equipment within control buildings
    • general substation arrangement and layout
    • plan and elevation drawings
    • construction details
  • Develop and oversee engineering deliverables such as:
    • single-line diagrams
    • high-voltage bus layouts
    • cable and conduit layouts
    • wiring layouts
    • auxiliary power systems
    • grounding systems
    • control building layouts
  • Perform or oversee required engineering studies, calculations, and bills of material development.
  • Manage combined project BOM and MDL from multiple sources.
  • Write and/or review high-voltage equipment technical specifications and support sourcing activities, including vendor quotation reviews.
  • Direct and coordinate the work of engineers, designers, CAD operators, and other technical contributors to meet project requirements for scope, cost, quality, and schedule.
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders, including Project Engineering Directors, Project Engineering Managers, Project Managers, sourcing teams, customers, and support organizations.
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for customers and project managers.
  • Lead technical change control and engineering risk management throughout project execution.
  • Support oversight of engineering subcontractors, including:
    • scope definition
    • schedule adherence
    • hours and budget tracking
    • change management
    • quality control
    • customer coordination
  • Help ensure customer engineering critical-to-quality (CTQ) requirements are achieved.
  • Support proposals and tenders for substation projects, including engineering hour estimates and major equipment application.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university
    • BSEE preferred
  • Valid Professional Engineer (P.E.) license in the United States
    • (or demonstrating his/her plan to get PE license within a certain period) and willing to review and seal your work and the work of others under your supervision.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in Transmission & Distribution substation engineering, including work for:
    • electric utilities
    • renewable energy power plants
    • substation project applications
  • Demonstrated experience as an Electrical Project Engineer on substation projects, including:
    • primary/outdoor physical substation design
    • associated engineering studies
  • Strong knowledge of HV equipment used in AIS and GIS substations
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 20%, including international travel, in accordance with company travel guidelines
  • Must be authorized to work remotely within the U.S.
    • Projects supported by this role are based in California

Desired Qualifications

  • Deep knowledge of North American high-voltage substation standards and practices, including:
    • IEEE
    • ANSI
    • NEC
    • NESC
    • local grid codes
  • Strong understanding of high-voltage equipment safety, application, sizing, and integration
  • Ability to develop sound engineering design packages even when customer specifications are limited or incomplete
  • Working knowledge of EPC and/or Engineering Equipment Package (EEP) project execution
  • Understanding of civil and structural design requirements related to substations
  • Practical knowledge of engineering calculations and equipment selection for primary and secondary systems, including:
    • battery sizing and DC system component selection
    • power transformer and circuit breaker selection
    • protection systems
    • control and power cable sizing and rating
    • bus, fittings, insulators, and arrester selection
    • grounding grid design
    • lightning protection

For candidates applying to a U.S. based position, the pay range for this position is between $113,200.00 and $188,800.00. The Company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120% or 130% of salary in certain areas. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set.

Bonus eligibility: discretionary annual bonus.
