Job Title: Testing & Commissioning Engineer - HV Substations & HVDC Projects
Location: Project Sites (Domestic & International Travel Required)
Role Overview
The Testing & Commissioning Engineer is responsible for executing all on-site testing, pre-commissioning, and final commissioning activities for high-voltage electrical systems, including AC substations (up to 765kV and above) and HVDC converter stations. This role ensures that all systems are installed, tested, and operating in compliance with project specifications, international standards (IEC, IEEE), and rigorous safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- On-site Testing & Commissioning: Conduct comprehensive testing and commissioning of primary and secondary equipment in HV/EHV AIS (Air Insulated Switchgear) and GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) substations and HVDC converter stations.
- Equipment Testing: Perform various tests on equipment including power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnectors, instrument transformers (CTs/VTs), surge arresters, power cables, and MV/LV auxiliary systems (DC chargers, battery systems, UPS).
- Protection & Control Systems: Execute primary and secondary injection tests on protection relays (e.g., Siemens, ABB, GE, Hitachi, SEL make), verify correct operation of protection schemes (overcurrent, differential, distance, busbar protection), and conduct functional and interlock tests.
- System Integration & SCADA: Ensure seamless integration of all components and verify the functionality of SCADA, control, protection, and interlocking systems.
- Documentation & Reporting: Prepare, review, and manage all testing and commissioning documentation, including test reports, commissioning certificates, and as-built drawings/schematic markups, in coordination with the engineering department.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues and equipment malfunctions during the T&C phases, often in collaboration with design engineers and vendors.
- Analysis: Collecting the details of Events from Project Site. Analysis of those events with SMEs (subject Matter Experts). Explaining the Causes of Events to Customer and resolving their queries. Arranging the Solutions upto their satisfaction as per mutually agreed timeline. (Specially in HVDC Projects)
- Safety & Compliance: Uphold rigorous health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards and compliance with local/international regulations (e.g., IEC 61850, NETA).
- Site Coordination: Supervise site technicians and contractors, manage manpower, coordinate schedules, and provide daily progress reports to the Project/Commissioning Manager.
- Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT): Potentially participate in witnessing factory acceptance tests for major equipment before delivery to site.

Required Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or a related field. A Diploma in Electrical Engineering with more experience may also be considered.
- Experience: Minimum 5-10 years of proven experience in testing and commissioning of HV/MV substations; experience with large-scale HVDC projects is highly preferred.
- Technical Expertise:
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems up to 400kV and general knowledge of HVDC technology.
- Proficiency in using testing equipment such as Omicron, Megger, Doble, CPC 100, and TTR testers.
- Expertise in interpreting electrical single-line diagrams, schematics, and equipment wiring diagrams.
- Familiarity with substation automation systems, communication protocols (DNP3, Modbus), and engineering software tools (e.g., Siemens DIGSI, ETAP, PSCAD) is advantageous.
- Soft Skills:
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and clients.
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality assurance.
- Willingness to travel extensively to project sites for extended periods.
