Job Description Summary

Role Summary/Purpose:
We are looking for a New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineer to join our global FACTS (NPI) team. The position will be based in Tampere, Finland.
Grid Solutions delivers mainly high power (>100MVAr) Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) as Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM) and Static Var Compensators (SVC), Fixed Series Capacitors (FSC) and Synchronous Condensers (SC). These are used to control power system voltage and reactive power flow as well as to improve the power system stability and transmission system efficiency. FACTS devices are also typically used to enable the integration of renewables to the power system making the future power system more sustainable. Energy transformation towards generation of electricity from renewables have significantly increased the markets for FACTS devices and R&D needs for the power system stability products. The Product Delivery Group (PDG) for power electronics-based products STATCOM and SVC is in Tampere, Finland, while the PDG for FSC and SC is in Saratoga Springs, United States.

In this position, you will focus on control system research and development around SVC and STATCOM solutions and you will be reporting to NPI Program Manager in Finland.

Job Description

Key tasks:

Your main task is a research and development around control system application and protection design. The target is to implement innovative control system architectures, features and algorithms mainly for STATCOM and SVC to comply with highly demanding customer specifications. You will be accountable of control and protections application feature designs within simulation environments to enable smooth engineering execution. You are expected to have capability to specify, design, validate and document the implemented control and protection applications and solutions. On top, it is expected that you manage test automatization development.

In this very versatile role, you have possibility to become recognized expert in the field of control system design, power electronics and power systems. Your areas of expertise will include:

  • Control application design
  • Protection design
  • Test automation design
  • Different simulation platforms
  • Control system design of grid connected power electronic devices
  • Power engineering
  • Analyses of dynamic behaviour of FACTS devices
  • Power system stability and control stability

In this role, you will be focusing on the control platform development for current and future products as well as future technologies. Therefore, you will have the possibility see larger technology trends in the field of electrical power engineering and power electronics. Due to the innovative nature of the role, you are expected to contribute on patents and scientific publications. This role gives you real opportunity to work for the more sustainable and green future power system.

The research and development work will comply with the good design practices starting from rigour specification definition to implementation, validation and documentation.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • MSc (or higher) degree on Power / Control System Engineering or equivalent
  • Specialized knowledge on control and protection applications
  • Specialized knowledge on test automatization and simulation environment development
  • Specialized knowledge in Electrical Power Engineering and Control system design
  • Understanding of control theory behind grid connected devices
  • Knowledge in compensation systems, power electronics
  • Knowledge and experience on some of simulation tools for electric systems such as PSCAD, Matlab Simulink, RTDS or PSSE
  • Fluent written and oral skills, both in English and Finnish - other language skill is a benefit
  • Strong prioritizing and time management skills
