As the Lead Engineer, you are essential to the successful execution of our projects.

You will provide technical leadership to other engineers and customer facing teams, overseeing each phase of the project delivery to make sure that we deliver valuable systems solutions with an excellent operational rigor.

This role involves work for customers who manage critical infrastructure; based on customer requirements it will be necessary to carry out background checks and suitability assessments (e.g. UK Security Clearance (SC)) as part of the hiring process.'

Job Description

Role Summary

  • As part of the Systems Engineering team, lead system engineering execution on rail projects, accurately, on schedule and to budget.
  • Provide technical leadership to the projects, and support the customer facing business unit in the technical delivery of projects, delivering valued system solutions with excellent operational rigor.
  • Support the tendering team to provide the nest technical offers in line with customer requirements and standards.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Fully engage with Business Engineering Leadership, Lead Engineering Management, Project Management and Supply Chain, as appropriate, in order to execute our projects with excellence.
  • Lead a team of multidiscipline engineers specialising in power systems, power conversion, automation, control and mechanical integration ensuring the overall solution meets customer, contract and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage team activities for technical deliveries of projects; planning as required using management tools to ensure on time delivery and quality targets were met.
  • Provide technical leadership, advice and assistance to the overall project team as appropriate including Commissioning, Service and 3rd parties.
  • Support the Project Manager as required and deputise for them as and when the need arises.
  • Plan and progress all design engineering related activities including testing and commissioning for specific projects.
  • Establish, drive and maintain the engineering quality control system for projects in line with company guidelines.
  • Monitor, control and manage engineering budgets, project documentation, risk management process, FMEA, design reviews and the change control system in accordance with company guidelines.
  • Manage customer requirements, derive sub-system and equipment requirements, cross reference with validation evidence.
  • Liaise with other departments, GE businesses, sub-contractors and suppliers, as appropriate, in order to support the project for the best outcome of the customer and business.
  • Support and help drive improvements in the efficiency of the engineering process, systems & solutions to improve customer value.
  • Build and drive a project specific 'cost out' plans in concert with the Project Management and Sourcing teams.
  • Communicate solutions across the wider Engineering community.
  • Coordinate resources to deliver system projects including complying with quality processes and resolving problems.
  • Report project status, plans and risks.
  • Own the project engineering budget.
  • Comply with all company and customer health and safety regulations.

Qualifications / Requirements

  • Degree or equivalent in electrical/mechanical engineering or related subject.
  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent proven record of continuous professional development.

Have significant experience in:

  • An engineering leadership environment.
  • Application engineering.
  • Rail applications.
  • Specifying components: drives, motors, transformers, switchboards...
  • Design and system integration working on complex multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Integrated control schemes with PLCs, HMI and Drives.
  • Power generation, conversion, transmission and distribution.
  • LV and MV variable speed drives and motors.
  • On site commissioning of large projects.
  • Managing and evidencing compliance and with Requirements, Codes and Regulations.

Personal Qualities

  • Entrepreneurial spirit.
  • Experience of owning the job, making it their own, and adding value beyond.
  • Capable of leading large multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Ability to multi-task on a variety of tasks to strict time scales.
  • Exceptional analytical, interpersonal, communication, presentation and facilitation skills.
  • Customer-centric mind set, experience in translating customer issues / needs into profitable business solutions.

Circumstances

  • Willing to travel within UK and overseas for short term working.
  • Willing to work extended hours at critical times.
  • Driving license.
