As the Lead Product Owner for Substation Layout & Mechanical Integration, you will lead the strategic and technical development of physical solutions for FACTS systems.

This role is focused on technical authority, layout & assembly drawing review, and cost-optimisation of substation layouts, load engineering, noise mitigation and mechanical-civil integration.

You will function with high autonomy, making critical decisions that balance customer requirements with business standards.

Your role is key to ensuring that all layout and assembly designs are accurate, safe, and cost-competitive from ITO through to project execution.

Role Overview

  • This Lead Product Owner position is critical for the FACTS business to drive technical excellence within the Electromechanical team, specifically for Substation Layout, Assembly, Noise mitigation, and Mechanical Integration.
  • The role is essential for optimising layout designs, assembly drawings, and civil inputs. Furthermore, the position is responsible for validating load engineering standards and ensuring technical compliance during both the ITO phase and OTR projects.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Strategic Layout & Assembly Design Review:

  • Act as the final technical authority for Substation Layouts and Mechanical Integration.
  • Lead the review of conceptual layouts and assembly drawings based on SLD, ensuring that electrical clearances, footprint, maneuverability, and maintenance access are optimised and compliant with standards.

Mechanical Integration Ownership:

  • Responsible for the thorough review and approval of assembly drawings and installation guides for all primary components.
  • Ensure that component-to-component integration is seamless and that the BOM is accurate for site execution.

Load Engineering Governance:

  • Define, execute, and approve complex mechanical analyses, including static, impulse, seismic, wind, and environmental load calculations.
  • Validate safety factors and ensure accurate load transfer to steel and civil structures.

Civil Review & Cost Optimisation:

  • Lead the review of civil drawings and calculations with a cost-out mindset.
  • Identify and eliminate over-design in foundation sizing and rebar quantities.
  • Drive the logic for combined vs. separate foundation strategies to minimise site costs.

Noise Mitigation & Environmental Leadership:

  • Own the roadmap for noise analysis and environmental enclosures.
  • Implement and review noise mitigation strategies through layout optimisation, barriers, or specialised enclosures to meet project specifications.

ITO Support:

  • Validate CBC alignments during the ITO phase.
  • Ensure technical compliance and enable business tools for accurate bidding and transition to execution.

Leadership & Mentorship:

  • Act as a senior technical resource, leading small projects and initiatives.
  • Foster a First Time Right culture through rigorous reviews and bring multidisciplinary teams to consensus.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Drive a mindset to optimise structural designs and champion the use of digital tools like BIM/Revit to enhance design accuracy and efficiency.

Required Qualifications:

  • This role requires advanced experience in Mechanical Engineering or Civil Engineering with a focus on High Voltage Substation or large-scale industrial components.
  • Knowledge level is comparable to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college.
  • Extensive experience in Substation Design & Layout and reviewing complex mechanical assembly drawings.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills in English.

Desired Characteristics:

Advanced Technical Expertise: Advanced understanding across Layout & Assembly validation, SLD, short-circuit forces, seismic analysis, and governing load case identification.

Civil & Structural Awareness: Ability to perform foundation sizing sanity checks and rebar optimization.

Cost-Out & Kaizen Mindset: Proven ability to identify and eliminate unnecessary costs in civil and structural works.

Strategic Thinking: Ability to distinguish between core requirements and nice-to-have features to ensure project competitiveness.

Stakeholder Influence: Excellent skills in leading technical negotiations and influencing internal and external stakeholders.

Digital Proficiency: Familiarity with AutoCAD, SOLIDWORKS, SoundPLAN, BIM/Revit, 3D layout tools, and business enablement tools.
