Lead Engineer - Automation & Control (Substation Automation Projects up to 765kV)
Responsible for delivering comprehensive Automation and Control Engineering solutions for Substation Automation (SA) projects up to 765kV, in alignment with customer specifications and the technical offer.
Acts as the technical authority for the project, ensuring the successful execution of both basic and detailed design phases within the defined delivery timelines, design budget (man-days), and quality standards.
Promotes design excellence that facilitates ease of installation and commissioning, ensuring alignment with customer expectations and operational requirements.

Key Responsibilities & Expertise
- Conducted comprehensive job studies for automation projects, establishing project strategy, conceptual DCS design, deliverables, and Bill of Materials (BoM) based on tender requirements. Estimated budgeted man-days and updated design-related risk assessments with mitigation plans.
- Prepared and released technical design documents, engineering calculations, and DCS configurations. Selected and finalized IEDs and Bought-Out Items (BOIs), raised purchase requisitions, and explored cost optimization opportunities throughout the design phase.
- Lead design reviews and participated in customer technical meetings. Addressed customer observations and ensured timely approvals while adhering to quality procedures and engineering standards.
- Optimized solutions for augmentation projects, ensuring seamless integration with existing systems and infrastructure.
- Performed critical design calculations, including:
- Network data flow analysis
- Estimation of data point counts
- Sizing of BCU, EFS, and HMI components
- Coordinated with cross-functional teams, including testing teams, and participated in Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT). Supported site teams in resolving technical issues and managing snag lists. Maintained technical interfaces with suppliers and partners.
- Provided technical leadership to project teams. Validated IED integration across multiple protocols and led troubleshooting of SAS systems. Captured and applied Return of Experience (RoE) to enhance future project designs. Collaborated with Product Line teams to resolve technical issues.
- Ensured compliance with EHS standards and demonstrated a strong commitment to safety through active participation in safe work practices.
- Analyzed customer technical requirements and represented their interests in design decisions, working closely with Growth Leaders.
- Possessed deep understanding of business drivers and how team deliverables integrate with broader organizational goals.
- Ensured high-quality, on-time delivery of design packages. Monitored execution progress, mitigated delivery risks, and managed design hours effectively.
- Collaborated with Project Management to assess technical and cost impacts. Identified additional scope and supported Variation Order (VO) claims.
- Adhere to all EHS (Environment, Health & Safety) procedures and demonstrate a strong commitment to safe working practices.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in engineering (Electrical & Electronics) or (Electrical)
- 8-10 years of hands-on experience in independently managing the design, testing, and troubleshooting of Substation Automation Systems (SAS).
- Extensive knowledge of Substation Automation technologies, including:
- Communication protocols: IEC 61850, Modbus, IEC 103, IEC 104
- Networking & VLAN concepts and communication architecture
- Database configuration and IED integration
- System testing and validation
- Familiarity with Cybersecurity standards and configuration practices relevant to SAS environments.
- Working knowledge of protection systems and commissioning processes for SAS (considered an added advantage).
- Understanding of utility-specific standards and practices, with experience adapting solutions to meet diverse customer requirements.
- Proficient in project organization and engineering workflows, ensuring efficient execution and delivery.
- Skilled in DCS troubleshooting tools, enabling effective diagnostics and resolution of system issues.
