Lead Engineer - BWRX-300 Plant Electrical Systems

Job Description Summary

This role is responsible for the design of electrical power systems supporting the BWRX-300 Small Module Reactor. This involves the design, analysis, procurement and integration of the electrical power systems ranging from the main generator and grid connection, in plant distribution system down to the end use loads.

The required work location is Markham, Ontario (relocation assistance provided if not already local).

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • System Architecture: Lead the design and integration of SC1/Class 1E (safety-related) and SC2 and SC3 electrical systems, including Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) distribution.
  • Analysis & Modeling: Perform complex electrical studies such as load flow, short circuit, motor starting, and protective relay coordination using ETAP software using ANSI / IEC standards.
  • Prepare Electrical Engineer Deliverables: Prepare electrical engineering deliverables such as Requirements Specifications, Electrical Load Lists, One-lines, Calculations, Schematics and 3-Line lines. Ensure deliverables are on-spec., on-budget, and on-schedule.
  • Equipment Specification: Develop detailed procurement specifications for major components, including main transformers, switchgear, diesel generators, and UPS systems and collaborate with suppliers.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Navigate regulatory requirements (CA-CNSC and US-NRC), support licensing processes, ensuring all designs meet nuclear-specific standards.
  • Grid Integration: Interface with transmission providers to manage Generator Interconnection Agreements and ensure grid stability compliance.
  • Compliance with Codes and standards: Applications of codes and standards applicable to electrical systems design in the US and CA (e.g. IEEE, IEC, CSA and NEC); European Union (eg. IEC, EU)

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.)
  • 5+ years in heavy and high reliability industries such as nuclear, power, process, marine, oil & gas, military, etc

Desired Characteristics:

  • Master's degree in Engineering for Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or equivalent year technical degree.
  • Ability to design and draft, independently produce finish products using AutoCad or MicroStation
  • Experience using modern digital engineering collaboration and design tools such as:

    • Hexagon Smart Electrical (SPEL)
    • Content creation [e.g., Confluence/Atlassian],
    • Requirements management [e.g., DOORS-NextGen/IBM, MS Team Center],
    • Diagram and drawing [e.g., Visio/Microsoft, AutoCAD/Autodesk],
    • Design and analysis simulation [e.g., Easy5/MSC, Simulink-MATLAB/MathWorks, Mathcad/PTC, 3KeyMaster/WSC, ETAP, SKM],
    • Change, configuration, document, and bill of material (BOM) management [e.g., ENOVIA/Dassault-Systems].
  • Strong Protection and Control experience

    • Experience with Grid Interface
    • Experience with Generator and Larger Power Transformer Protection
    • Programming and setting GE-Multilin and SEL Relays
