Job Description Summary

As an Electronics Hardware Engineer, you will report to the Valve Converter Electrical Team Lead within the Valve Converter Engineering & Technology Function (Team who deliver development project and customer projects for the HVDC Valve Converter).

The successful candidate will be part of a highly motivated, dynamic and rapidly growing team of engineers working on the project activities related to HVDC applications. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GE's leading contribution has worldwide recognition.

The role gives an excellent opportunity for a motivated candidate to innovate, expand their design skill and personal development within an internationally recognised expert in this exciting field.

Whilst based at the HVDC Centre of Excellence in Stafford there will be international travel opportunities to collaborate with other GE units, test laboratories and customer sites.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • The candidate requires a good level of the technical understanding and working experience of digital and analogue electronic design including power supply circuit, control and protection circuit of power electronic device such as IGBT and thyristor.
  • The candidate should demonstrate a high degree of knowledge and understanding of electronic components and principles.
  • The candidate is expected to have good knowledge and experience on testing to validate electronic circuit using prior experience and on-the-job training. It is required to have technical skills and analytic thinking to perform fault analysis and design improvement, this include performing bench level and high voltage testing.
  • An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering methods and a willingness to share knowledge are essential qualities.
  • Generate technical documentation such as test report and specification for electronic circuit.
  • Performing routine and type test specifications and pre-commissioning testing of converter valves
  • Product support during complete life cycle from development to tender and commissioning of project
  • Expectation to travel 20% of the time across the world.

Candidate profile

The candidate will probably be educated to degree level in electronic engineering. However, this is not as important as a proven track record and evidence that you have the experience and abilities to perform the role.

Candidates should have proven experience of design, application and testing for electronic circuit.

An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering disciplines and a willingness to share the knowledge are essential qualities. Ideally, the candidate will have a good track record of leading a team of engineers in delivering a technical project on time and according to the scope.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Educated to degree level in electronic engineering

Required Characteristics:

  • Has knowledge and experience of design or application of power electronic driver circuit.
  • Has knowledge and experience of in board power supply circuit design and development.
  • Has experience of circuit verification (bench testing) and validation (integration testing) testing.
  • Has some knowledge of firmware logic design.
  • Has knowledge of digital electronic circuit design and development.
  • Has knowledge of analogue electronic circuit design and development.
  • Has experience of electronic design for EMC.
  • Has some knowledge and experience of model based product development tools (MATLAB, Mathcad, LTspice). (Preferred attribute)
  • Ensure correct and accurate technical documentation is generated consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
  • Has knowledge of failure analysis and root cause analysis. Has the ability to participate in problem solving activities such as 8D or similar.
  • Interface with electronics manufacturers and suppliers.
  • Influences quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the team.
  • Occasional global travel for product validations, product testing and supply chain integration activities
