Lead Customer Project Engineer
Job Description Summary
As an HV Switchgear Project Engineer within GE Vernova - Grid Solutions, you will be responsible for the technical execution of high-voltage AIS/GIS switchgear projects. In this mid-role, you will leverage approximately 10 years of experience in power systems, HV switchgear and protection & control solutions to lead the engineering scope from proposal and design through manufacturing follow-up, testing, and commissioning support.
You will work closely with Project Management, Tendering, Sourcing, Factories, Services, and our customers to deliver safe, compliant, and cost-effective Grid Solutions that meet contractual requirements, schedule, and quality targets, operating in a hybrid (office/remote) environment.

Roles and Responsibilities
Leading
- Act as the technical lead engineer for assigned Grid Solutions HV switchgear (AIS/GIS) projects, serving as the primary engineering interface for internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate technical activities across Engineering, Project Management, Sourcing, Factories, Sales, and Services to ensure alignment with project scope, budget, and schedule.
- Drive technical clarification, risk identification, and decision-making, ensuring solutions comply with customer specifications, IEC standards, and GE Grid Solutions procedures.
- Lead or actively contribute to technical meetings, design reviews, and customer clarification sessions, providing clear recommendations and documenting outcomes.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers, supporting capability development within the engineering team.
Operation
- Review and interpret customer specifications, grid codes, and standards for HV switchgear, substations, and associated protection & control systems.

- Single-line diagrams and substation layouts.
- Protection & control schematics, interlocking logic, and control circuits
- Equipment ratings, insulation coordination concepts, and functional descriptions for AIS/GIS solutions.
- Equipment lists and technical data sheets.
- Calculation reports (e.g., short-circuit, load, basic insulation coordination).
- Test procedures and acceptance criteria.
- Reviewing as-built documentation, incorporating site survey information, and reflecting existing conditions in new drawings.
- Updating wiring diagrams and interlocking schemes to integrate new equipment into existing panels and systems.
Deliverables
- Deliver all assigned engineering outputs in line with project schedule, quality standards, and Grid Solutions document control requirements, including:
- Single-line diagrams, general arrangement in wiring drawings.
- Bills of materials (BOMs) and equipment specifications for AIS/GIS and auxiliary systems.
- Protection and control schematics, logic diagrams, interconnection diagrams
- Test plans, commissioning procedures, and as-built documentation
- Provide robust technical input to tenders and proposals, including:
- Technical clarifications, deviations, and alternative solutions
- Technical risk assessments and value-engineering options
- Prepare and maintain engineering status reports, risk and issue logs, and inputs for internal project and technical reviews.
- Ensure all deliverables are reviewed, validated, and compliant with technical requirements, EHS standards, and internal Grid Solutions quality procedures.
Support
- Support Tendering and Commercial teams with technical clarifications, solution concepts, and cost/benefit assessments during the bid phase for HV switchgear and substation projects.
- Provide technical support to Site and Services teams during installation, testing, and commissioning of HV switchgear, ensuring safe and effective execution.
- Support customer training and handover, explaining system design, operation, and maintenance where required.
- Contribute to continuous improvement within Grid Solutions by:
- Providing feedback on standard designs, reference solutions, and engineering tools
- Participating in root cause analyses, lessons learned, and implementation of preventive actions
- Actively participate in knowledge sharing across the Grid Solutions Engineering organization to strengthen the global technical community.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline.
- Significant professional experience in power systems and HV/MV switchgear/substation engineering, preferably within utility, EPC, or TSO and utilities environments.
- Strong understanding of HV switchgear (AIS/GIS) design and application, including:
- Protection and control schemes, interlocking logic, and auxiliary systems
- Proven experience applying relevant IEC, especially:
- IEC 62271 series
- Local TSO grid codes and utility requirements
- Demonstrated ability to read, create, and review electrical drawings and documentation:
- Single-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, layouts, and interconnection diagrams
- Proven experience (user level) engineering/design tools (e.g., AutoCAD, EPLAN or similar) and standard MS Office applications.
- Experience working in cross-functional, project-based environments, coordinating technical activities with multiple stakeholders (PM, factories, sourcing, site).
- Good written and verbal communication skills in English with the ability to communicate effectively with customers and internal stakeholders.
- Ability to travel occasionally to Grid Solutions factories, customer sites, and test facilities.
