Roles and Responsibilities

GE Vernova delivers reactive power compensators such as Static Synchronous Compensators (STATCOM) and Static Var Compensators (SVC), on which we are the global FACTS Solution Line based in Finland, India, Brazil and US. These systems are used to control power system voltage and reactive power flow as well as to improve the power system stability and transmission system efficiency. We are looking for Engineering Manager to join the FACTS Solution Line team. The position will be based in Noida, India with homeworking flexibility. You will be working on cutting edge technology and varied international high-profile projects. In this position, you will be reporting to FACTS Engineering Leader India- a top priority position to lead a critical engineering discipline in FACTS business.

The Engineering Manager shall lead and manage the Control & Protection, SCADA, HMI, Communication System, and Cyber Security engineering activities for utility scale STATCOM and Grid stability projects across domestic and international markets. The role is responsible for technical leadership, engineering execution, customer interface, team development, quality assurance, and successful delivery of projects from bid stage through commissioning and handover.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Engineering & Technical Responsibilities:

  • Lead a multidisciplinary engineering team responsible for STATCOM Control & Protection system hardware design, SCADA, HMI Configuration, Communication, Protocols and Cyber security systems.
  • Manage engineering schedules, resource planning, workload allocation, and competency development.
  • Drive engineering excellence, standardisation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Provide technical mentorship, and coaching to engineers and project teams.
  • Competency of SCADA software servers, Historians, and engineering tools (e.g., Siemens WinCC, ABB Micro SCADA, AVEVA Oasis).
  • Database Management: Advanced SQL scripting, relational database management, and handling real-time, high-frequency historical data.
  • HMI/UI Engineering: Designing dynamic single-line diagrams (SLDs), configuring complex alarm management hierarchies, and scripting custom graphical behaviours (using Python, C#, or VBA).
  • Hardware Interfacing: Physical wiring, testing, and troubleshooting of Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), communication gateways, and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs).
  • SCL File Engineering: Advanced editing and manipulation of Substation Configuration Language files (.SCD, .ICD, .CID, .IID) to map logical nodes and data attributes across multi-vendor systems.
  • Programmable Logic Programming: Proficiency in programming Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) using IEC 61131-3 languages, primarily Function Block Diagrams (FBD) and Structured Text (ST).

  • Fault Ride Through
  • Grid Code Compliance functions

Ensure compliance with applicable standards including:

  • IEC 62443
  • IEC 62351
  • Utility cyber security specifications
  • Interface with utilities, consultants, and customers for technical discussions and approval.

People Leadership Tasks:

In this position, you will lead the global expert organization for System Design of grid integration of high power (> 100MVAr) reactive power compensators, namely STATCOM (static synchronous compensator) and SVC (static var compensator). Your main task is people and engineering leadership, and together with your team you will be accountable for successful engineering delivery according to highly demanding customer specifications. You get to see the full engineering workflow from Tender evaluations and bid preparation, to projects' detail design, and finally commissioning of the compensator at the actual site.

  • Build, lead & mentor a high-performance engineering team.
  • Develop engineering competency and technical expertise within the organization.
  • Allocate resources and monitor engineering schedules for multiple projects.
  • Drive engineering quality, productivity and on-time deliverables.
  • Establish standard engineering practices, templates, and workflows.
  • Conduct technical reviews and engineering risks assessments.
  • Support employee development, training & succession plan.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • 14 - 18 years of relevant experience in Power System Studies.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience specifically in STATCOM/FACTS projects.
  • Experience in utility scale grid integration and EHV substations preferred.
  • People leadership skills
  • BTech/MTech/PhD degree in Electrical Engineering preferably in Power System.
  • Experience from Substation/Grid system design solutions, e.g. FACTS, HVDC
  • Knowledge in development/application of engineering processes and continuous improvement
  • Strategic view to anticipate and implement coming needs
  • Fluent written and oral skills in English
  • Strong prioritizing and time management skills

Desired Characteristics:

  • Strong understanding of FACTS and Power Electronics applications
  • Deep knowledge in IEC/IEEE/CIGRE standards related to harmonics and insulation coordination.
  • Excellent analytical and troubleshooting capabilities
  • Experience of handling global utility/customers' requirements
  • Exposure to Indian Grid Code, CEA regulations, and international utility standards preferred.
  • Desire to work in international environment
