Supplier Quality Engineer, Electrical
Description
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI three times per week, at minimum or other frequency dictated by the business.
The Role
The Supplier Quality Engineer, Electrical is a key liaison between Purchasing, Engineering, Manufacturing, and our global supply base, ensuring robust launch execution and ongoing quality performance of supplier-provided components. You will lead Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP), execute the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP) and Run at Rate (R@R), and drive systemic problem solving with suppliers to deliver flawless parts to our manufacturing plants and customers.
Travel is required (approximately 40-50% domestic) to visit supplier manufacturing locations and GM facilities.
What You'll Do
- Lead APQP with assigned suppliers to meet or exceed program timing and quality targets, ensuring manufacturing readiness at key milestones.
- Review and approve supplier quality deliverables, including Process Flow Diagrams, PFMEAs, Control Plans, MSA, and capability studies, ensuring alignment to GM standards and customer requirements.
- Execute and approve PPAP and Run@Rate submissions, confirming process capacity, stability, and robust control of key characteristics prior to production release.
- Monitor supplier performance using key quality metrics (PPM, PRR/SPPS, warranty, launch issues) and drive continuous improvement through structured action plans and workshops.
- Lead structured problem solving (e.g., Red X, 7 Diamonds, 8D/SPPS) for supplier-related issues, from fast containment through root cause analysis and robust long-term corrective actions.
- Conduct on-site supplier assessments and process reviews to verify manufacturing process capability, quality system effectiveness, and compliance with IATF 16949 and GM requirements
- Partner cross-functionally with Design Release Engineering, Manufacturing, Plant Quality, Purchasing, and Launch teams to ensure alignment on design changes, risk mitigation, and launch readiness.
- Develop and share lessons learned across programs and commodities to prevent recurrence of systemic issues and strengthen standard work for supplier quality.
Your Skills & Abilities ( Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, Manufacturing, Materials, or related) or an equivalent technical degree (e.g., Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry) or relevant experience.
- Minimum 2+ years of experience in supplier quality, quality engineering, manufacturing engineering, or product engineering, preferably in the automotive or closely related industry.
- Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with APQP: PPAP, Run@Rate, control plans, PFMEA, MSA, and SPC.
- Proficient in print reading, GD&T, gage design and selection, part measurement, and application of dimensional data for decision making.
- Solid understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes, tooling, automation, and process controls.
- Demonstrated ability to use probability, statistical quality control, and design of experiments for problem solving and process optimization.
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams, influence without direct authority, and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
- High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with suppliers, engineering, manufacturing, and leadership at multiple levels.
- Strong oral, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to summarize complex technical issues into clear, action-oriented updates for both technical and non-technical audiences

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Advanced degree in Engineering, Quality, or a related technical discipline.
- Automotive supplier quality experience with direct responsibility for APQP/PPAP on complex components (e.g., electrical/electronic modules, PCBAs).
- Formal training or certification in Red X, Six Sigma (Green/Black Belt), or equivalent structured problem-solving methodologies.
- Experience with IATF 16949, and customer-specific requirements, including GM procedures such as GM 1927 Global Supplier Quality Manual and related standards.
- Previous experience leading suppliers through significant launch, ramp-up, or recovery situations, including containment, 3rd-party inspection management, and escalation processes.
- Demonstrated success coaching suppliers to build robust quality systems, improve process capability, and institutionalize layered process audits and error-proofing.
- Strong data analytics skills (e.g., Excel, statistical tools, visualization) to identify patterns, prioritize issues, and monitor the effectiveness of corrective actions.
- Experience working in global, multi-cultural environments, with the ability to adapt communication and leadership style across regions and cultures.
