Software Engineer, Site Reliability Engineering

3+ months ago Austin, TX

Description

The Role

At General Motors, the Cloud Platform team builds core software platforms that enable teams across the company to safely and efficiently deliver cloud-based products at scale. We design and develop high-impact, production-grade software services that power a multi-cloud Platform-as-a-Service used by millions of GM customers interacting with their vehicles and digital services.

This is a software engineering role with a strong reliability focus. Engineers on this team write, ship, and own critical platform services end-to-end-from design and implementation to deployment and long-term operation. Reliability, scalability, and observability are treated as engineering problems and are embedded directly into the systems we build.

You will work closely with other platform and product engineering teams to design APIs, build shared services, and evolve our cloud platform. Engineers participate fully in the software development lifecycle and share responsibility for supporting the systems they build, including participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation.

What You'll Do

  • Design, implement, and maintain production-grade backend and platform services that enable teams to deploy and operate workloads in the cloud.
  • Write clean, well-tested, and maintainable code, contributing to service APIs, internal frameworks, and platform tooling.
  • Build and evolve automation and infrastructure-adjacent software that supports service deployment, configuration, and lifecycle management.
  • Partner with peer engineering teams to integrate platform capabilities into their applications and influence system design with scalability and reliability in mind.
  • Define and implement observability, resilience, and fault-tolerance patterns directly in the services you build.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, respond to production incidents, lead root-cause analysis, and drive long-term engineering improvements.
  • Contribute to technical design discussions, architecture reviews, and platform roadmap planning.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 1-4 years of professional software engineering experience, preferably building backend, platform, or distributed systems.
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Go, Python, Java) with experience building production services.
  • Experience developing and operating software in a cloud environment.
  • Familiarity with software engineering best practices including code reviews, testing, CI/CD, and version control.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively within and across engineering teams.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience building or operating distributed systems, event-driven architectures, or service-oriented platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, ARM, Bicep, YAML pipelines).
  • Experience with Kubernetes-based platforms, including service deployment and networking concepts.
  • Experience with cloud services in AWS and/or Azure (e.g., AKS/EKS, Event Hubs, messaging systems).
  • Experience implementing observability in software systems (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Datadog).
  • Familiarity with cloud networking, security, identity, and certificate management.
  • Exposure to operating production systems, including incident response and post-incident analysis.
