Senior Hardware Engineer - Technical Specialist - Vehicle Dynamics Sensing

Senior Hardware Engineers are a professional responsible for leading the development and design of electrical hardware. The role of the hardware engineer involves various key responsibilities: component requirements development, component design, component validation.

The Role:

We are looking for a high-performing Technical Specialist comfortable in a fast-paced development cycle to be the global voice for Vehicle Dynamics Sensing Hardware. They will establish and maintain a clear strategy for sensing components, drive reuse and technical excellence of engineering solutions, collaborate with the key stakeholders and support teams to implement solutions across global vehicle platforms. This Technical Specialist will support sensors which provide data to vehicle dynamic sensing systems. These will include chassis accelerometers, chassis position sensors, steering angle sensors, seat position sensors, motorized seat belt modules, and thermal vision systems.

What you'll do:

  • Create Global Technical Direction - Define and implement standardization of designs across global regions.
  • Develop and Guide Best Practice Implementation - ensuring GM's best practices are relevant, globally competitive, up to date, and followed. Capture knowledge, document and disseminate learnings and benchmarking.
  • Conduct Tech Core meetings and lead technical symposiums as required.
  • Set, implement, and maintain Sensing HW best value BOM row strategic roadmaps - Identify technology gaps and recommend innovation projects.
  • UPC/FNA ownership, set CCC strategy, budget and sourcing, program SOR package approval, and manage complexity optimization.
  • Support and approve program Design Direction Reviews (DDR's). Drive design reuse across platforms.
  • Lead Peer Review Execution - Identify non-conformances, elevate issues, drive closure to issues.
  • Develop DFMEA templates - ensuring DFMEA/DRBFM templates are updated on time with high quality based on learning.
  • Lead BOM Row Safety and Compliance - Support all field action analysis and product safety activity. Engage in product safety processes including individual case evaluations - Conduct read-across of identified concerns into past and current product platforms as defined in the *S PRTS process. Support closed loop learning.
  • Maintain Statement of Requirements (SOR) template, Sub System Technical Specification (SSTS) documents and enforce compliance thereof.
  • Maintain Component Technical Specifications templates (CTRS) Appendix C1, and other commodity-specific C2 Appendices unique to the component
  • Provide technical leadership for advanced technology development.
  • Works with engineering functions, suppliers, plant personnel and others to implement cost reduction methods and product improvements, and to support program builds.
  • Monitor quality concerns on BOM Row components.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering
  • 5+ years of related engineering experience
  • Prior engineering experience with sensing systems (position sensors, object detection, environmental sensing, cameras, and/or thermal vision systems)
  • Ability to work non-standard hours to collaborate with overseas suppliers
  • Ability to travel internationally as necessary
  • Functional knowledge of engineering budgeting process
  • Ability to prioritize assignments/projects and multi-task within restricted time constraints
  • Ability to network and run effective meetings with diverse participants
  • Data driven, evidence-based issue-investigation and root cause analysis
  • Understanding of electronics hardware design, development and validation
  • Experience in leading projects and people including identifying and removing roadblocks
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent conflict resolution skills
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate employees, and drive work output

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications) ,

  • Master's degree in Engineering
  • Experience with Component Statement of Requirements (SOR) and Component Technical Specification (CTS) development
  • Experience with automotive PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) quality processes
  • Experience with "DRE Essentials" methods and tools
  • Experience in balancing and mitigating risks with projects, suppliers, quality, and production
  • DFMEA training
  • DFSS Black Belt Certification, Red X, and/or OpEx experience.
  • Design/Development of Safety Critical Systems/Components
  • Prior experience negotiating contracts
  • Prior experience working with build-to-print suppliers
  • Prior experience working with Corporate Common Components (CCC)

This position requires the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis. A company vehicle will be provided for this role with successful completion of a Motor Vehicle Report review.
