Description
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily metallurgy lab activities, including workflow coordination, scheduling, and prioritization of testing requests.
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized laboratory environment while enforcing all safety protocols and compliance requirements.
- Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate laboratory instruments to ensure consistent and accurate performance.
- Prepare, mount, grind, and polish metallurgical samples for microscopic and analytical evaluation.
- Perform metallurgical analyses including microstructural characterization, hardness testing, and weld quality assessments.
- Document results, maintain accurate records, and provide technical insights to engineering and research teams.
- Serve as the lead engineer for joining experiments, including laser welding and laser brazing trials.
- Develop, execute, and document experimental procedures to support process development, optimization, and validation.
- Maintain joining equipment, fixtures, and experimental setups to ensure repeatability, accuracy, and safety.
- Oversee installation, alignment, and calibration of photodiodes on laser heads.
- Ensure proper sensor setup for accurate data collection and real-time process monitoring.
- Support troubleshooting and continuous improvement of weld equipment and quality monitoring systems.
- Conduct tensile testing, resistance measurements, and other mechanical evaluations on welded and brazed specimens.
- Perform metallographic evaluations including sectioning, etching, polishing, and micrographic analysis.
- Measure and document weld dimensions using optical microscopy and related tools.
- Prepare materials and produce weld coupons.
- Conduct tensile testing and full cross-section analysis.
- Perform microscopic measurements to document weld geometry and dimensional characteristics.
- Operate general machine shop and material fabrication tools following all safe operating procedures.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Metallurgy, Materials Science, Welding Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
- Hands-on experience with metallographic sample preparation and microstructural evaluation.
- Experience with tensile testing, hardness testing, and mechanical property evaluation.
- Working knowledge of laser welding, laser brazing, or other joining processes.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple workflows simultaneously.
- Ability to interpret technical data and communicate findings clearly.
- High level of interpersonal skills to work independently and effectively with others
- High level of analytical ability where problems are unusual and difficult.
- Focused on following all safe operating practices
- High level of oral and written communication skills
- Work closely with multi-disciplined teams to understand functional requirements and implement appropriate solutions
- Effectively deals with ambiguity and effectively copes with change
- Stays abreast of new technologies and competitive products
- Demonstrated ability to use data driven problem solving techniques in the fast- changing test environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or 7+ years of relevant work experience
- Experience with photodiode-based process monitoring or other sensor-based welding diagnostics.
- Background in laboratory management or technical leadership.
- Experience with steel and aluminum joining processes.
- Familiarity with vision-system data collection and analysis.
- Experience supporting R&D, prototype builds, or production-oriented joining development.
- Experience with welding live battery cells/modules and required safety protocols.
- Experience with Ultrasonic welding process, equipment setup and performing experiments.
