The Role

Lead the development and integration of future General Assembly (GA) systems across GM, defining the Book of Equipment (BOE) and automation roadmap for both brownfield and greenfield plants. You'll connect process, tooling, automation, conveyance, and controls into cohesive systems that deliver fast, flexible, and frugal solutions.

This role sits in a centralized manufacturing engineering organization with frequent engagement at assembly plants, and requires a deep understanding of current GA processes plus a high degree of independent judgment.

What You'll Do

  • Lead GA integration studies to elevate automation levels in existing assembly sites and support future-of-factory BOE strategy development.
  • Drive cross-functional solutions by engaging Product Engineering, Launch, Plant ME, Operations, Controls, and Industrial Engineering to create enterprise, end-to-end GA systems.
  • Own SORs and project management for tools, equipment, stations, and enabling technologies-from concept through launch and continuous improvement.
  • Support design, build, integration, and installation of new automation and conveyance systems, ensuring they meet safety, quality, throughput, and cost targets.
  • Collaborate with suppliers on BOE and new automation studies; provide clear direction, technical input, and feedback to maintain alignment with GM standards and business objectives.
  • Manage project financials (capital, piece cost, installation), identifying and executing opportunities for cost, productivity, and uptime improvements.
  • Develop and validate advanced GA processes and technologies, including proof-of-concept trials and runoff plans.
  • Contribute to new Process MR development , ensuring critical product and process enablers are in place to unlock future automation strategies.
  • Facilitate virtual builds and VR events to de-risk future GA processes and validate system integration prior to physical launch.
  • Lead recurring BOE working / integration meetings , driving decisions, tracking risks, and ensuring robust issue closure.
  • Define container / material-handling enablers needed to support future automation and error-proofing, in partnership with logistics and packaging teams.
  • Align MCBF, MTTR, and SAA targets with new systems and work closely with throughput simulation teams to ensure designs meet capacity requirements.
  • Support work that may include periodic weekends, off-shift coverage, and occasional extended travel to plants and suppliers.

Key Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience.
  • 5+ years of manufacturing or process engineering experience.
  • 2+ years of launch experience (plant or central ME) in automotive or similarly complex manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated depth in core process engineering disciplines (e.g., tooling, ergonomics, process capability, automation/controls interface).
  • Strong knowledge of manufacturing processes and equipment , the Global Launch Process , and the Vehicle Development Process .
  • Proven ability to manage multiple, complex projects with high autonomy and clear accountability for timing, cost, and performance.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, including the ability to use data to prioritize and justify recommendations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills ; able to influence, coach, and align diverse stakeholders from plant operators to senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated initiative -reaching beyond assigned work to improve outcomes and mentor/teach others.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities, schedules, and environments to meet program and plant needs.

What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Proven ability to navigate ambiguity and convert loosely defined challenges into clear problem statements and executable action plans tied to key KPIs.
  • Extensive knowledge of throughput improvement principles (e.g., bottleneck analysis, OEE, line balancing, constraints management) in complex automated systems.
