This role is based remotely but if you live within a 50-mile radius of [Austin, Detroit, Warren, Milford, Mountain View or Sunnyvale], you are expected to report to that location three times a week, at minimum.

About Us

The AI Cloud and Developer Infrastructure organization is responsible for delivering and maintaining the tools and services engineers here at GM use every day to do their best work and drive our cars forward. Tools and services we work on enhancing the entire development process of engineers at GM - how/where code is checked out, modified, compiled, tested, merged, and eventually deployed. Our goal is to ensure our AV engineers and others here have world class tools and a seamless development experience so that they can focus on the problems that matter most in their domain.

The Role

We are looking for an Engineering Manager with an extensive background in build tooling, experience using a variety of developer tools and technologies, and who is passionate about developer productivity. As a leader on this team, we are looking for someone who cares deeply about the technical development of other engineers on the team and can effectively balance the needs and priorities of the business, our users, and the growth of our engineers.

The Team

Build Platform owns creating the build system and tooling that supports our AV and AI developers. We use Bazel in front of an in-house Remote Bazel Executor (RBE) and Content Addressable Storage (CAS) to provide a premier build experience at Cruise. Our team is constantly on the lookout for optimizations and new tooling that improves our product. GM AI developers are heavy users of Python and Docker. The speed at which they can iterate directly impacts the rate at which our AVs improve. The tooling and workflows that Build Platform provides are central to the productivity of our AI developers. Improvements in this space quickly lead to enormous impact for Cruise.

The way this manager will deliver impact may vary depending on the situation but they will be expected to develop and manage a successful team, and effectively communicate with stakeholders.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Lead the team responsible for improvements to our C++ / Python / AI development ecosystem and workflows, which have a measurable and direct impact on engineering productivity.


  • Collaborate with engineers across the company to understand and support their development workflows.


  • Own technical projects from start to finish and be responsible for major technical decisions and tradeoffs.


  • Drive complex projects that span teams, with many partners and customers.


  • Effectively drive planning, code reviews, and design discussions.


  • Contribute impactful projects to the team's roadmap, and work to load balance across the team with respect to motivations and career needs.

Minimum Qualifications (Must-Have)

  • 5+ years of experience leading design, buildout, and operation of production systems at scale in the cloud


  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience


  • Experience with / knowledge of developer tooling, build systems, C++, Python, etc.


  • Experience with / knowledge of compiler toolchain integrations (clang, gcc, nvcc, etc.).


  • Experience leading teams with broad, company-wide impact.


  • Attention to detail, and a desire to improve processes & systems around you.


  • Deep understanding of the business and operational impact for different technology tradeoffs.


  • Passion for developing and growing individual contributors.


  • Passion for leading with empathy, and developing a healthy team culture of balance and inclusion.


  • Passion for self-driving technology and its potential impact on the world.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)

  • 3+ years of experience managing software engineering teams.


  • Experience programming with C++, Python, or Go.


  • Experience with static and dynamic analysis tools (e.g., axivion, valgrind, asan, tsan, etc.).


  • Experience with build systems such as Bazel or Buck.


  • Experience with ML ecosystem frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, CUDA tools, etc.).


  • Experience with cloud infrastructure.

Compensation: The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws. The compensation may not be representative for positions located outside of New York, Colorado, California, or Washington.

  • The salary range for this role: is $200,000 to $285,000. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.

Note: program participants are required to purchase/lease a qualifying GM vehicle every four years unless one of a limited number of exceptions applies.
