Engineering Group Manager - Automation Execution

The Manufacturing Automation Execution Engineering Group Manager (EGM) is responsible for leading automation program execution and plant support across Vehicle Assembly (Body, Paint, General Assembly) and GPS operations. This role owns delivery of assigned programs from concept through Start of Regular Production (SORP) and supports manufacturing plants to ensure safe, on-time, and high-quality implementation.

The EGM leads a team of engineers and technical professionals responsible for automation systems, controls architecture, and standardized work. This role includes direct responsibility for team performance, hiring, development, safety, and inclusion, while driving continuous improvement in manufacturing productivity and system reliability. Travel to multiple manufacturing locations is required, including support during plant downtimes and shutdowns as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a multi-disciplinary controls and automation engineering team, including staffing, performance management, development, and budget ownership
  • Execute automation and controls programs from concept through installation, buy-off, and SORP at GM manufacturing facilities
  • Ensure adherence to GM manufacturing, controls, and safety standards
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, quality, cost, and safety
  • Develop and maintain strategies for sustaining and improving legacy manufacturing systems
  • Identify and support implementation of new automation and controls technologies
  • Lead collaboration on common software and controls solutions across supported plants
  • Partner with process engineering, manufacturing IT, and plant operations to resolve issues and deliver program objectives
  • Track program performance, maintain metrics, and provide regular status updates to leadership
  • Capture lessons learned and incorporate cost and quality improvements into standards and best practices
  • Ensure long-term sustainment of controls architecture and automation equipment at supported locations
  • Support HR processes including hiring, onboarding, employee development, and succession planning
  • Ensure team members are trained and compliant with all technical and safety requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an Engineering discipline
  • 7+ years of experience in a manufacturing engineering environment
  • 5+ years of experience with manufacturing processes, including automation, robotics, and vision systems
  • Experience supporting machining and/or assembly manufacturing systems
  • Strong analytical and technical problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineers and collaborate across organizations
  • Strong organizational, planning, and execution skills
  • Proficiency with standard office and engineering software applications
  • Ability and willingness to travel globally as required

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Manufacturing, Business, or Information Technology

This position requires the ability to legally operate a motor vehicle on a regular basis. A company vehicle will be provided for this role with successful completion of a Motor Vehicle Report review.
