Embedded Prototyping Engineer
Description
The Role
At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We're turning today's impossible into tomorrow's standard -from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.
Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.
As an Embedded Prototyping Engineer, you will support the evolving needs of the business by designing and building low to medium fidelity embedded hardware prototypes that enable rapid experimentation and early-stage validation. These prototypes serve as learning tools to explore technical feasibility, uncover design challenges, and inform future product decisions. By translating conceptual ideas into tangible hardware forms, the role helps accelerate innovation, reduce development risk, and foster cross-functional collaboration across engineering, product, and design teams.
What You'll Do
- Design and develop embedded hardware prototypes for early-stage product exploration
- Collaborate with product management teams to define prototype requirements and success metrics
- Conduct hands-on prototyping, including circuit design, microcontroller software development, and vehicle sensor integration
- Document learnings and technical findings to inform future development cycles
- Contribute to the creation of intellectual property (IP) through novel implementations and design approaches
- Support knowledge sharing across the organization
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
- 5+ years of experience in embedded hardware and software development
- Exposure to microcontrollers (e.g. STM32, Arduino, PIC, Raspberry Pi), sensors, and communication protocols
- Experience with PCB design tools and hardware and software debugging
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in fast-paced, iterative environments
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
- Experience with Automotive electrical systems
- Experience with on-board communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART, etc.)
- Experience with IOT communication protocols (BLE, Wi-Fi, and NFC)
- Experience with embedded microcontroller IDE's
- Experience with vehicle rapid prototyping platforms such as dSPACE MicroAutobox
- Proficiency of low-power design techniques for battery-powered systems
- Proficiency in schematic capture and PCB design tools (e.g. Altium, Eagle, etc.)
- Familiarity with industry standards and compliance (e.g. ISO, IEC, FCC)
- Familiarity with signal integrity, power integrity, and EMC/EMI considerations in hardware design
- Exposure to Build-Measure-Learn cycles and agile development methodologies
