Job Description

As a valued colleague on our Internal Communications team, you will provide strategic counsel on the development and delivery of internal communication strategies. You will work closely with senior executives and their teams to tell the Fannie Mae story, support change initiatives, strengthen engagement, and help employees understand the impact of their work.

Serving as a senior individual contributor, you will lead complex communications initiatives, advise senior stakeholders, and mentor colleagues. The role requires a high degree of autonomy, including setting strategic direction within agreed-upon priorities, making informed decisions within scope, and exercising sound judgment with minimal day-to-day oversight. You will bring active listening and curiosity, standing confidently behind recommendations informed by data insights, business context, and experience.

THE IMPACT YOU WILL MAKE

The Internal Communications Advisor plays a critical role in shaping communications strategies for senior executives and key business initiatives. This role provides strategic counsel, leads high-impact communications plans, and drives alignment, engagement, and clarity across the organization. You will deliver on the following responsibilities:

  • Strategic Communication Leadership: Develop, deliver, and advise business division partners on internal strategic communications for the enterprise or for select business division audiences, based on evolving priorities and business needs. This individual will align communications with the company's mission and business objectives and ensure that all stakeholders are informed and engaged.
  • Executive Communications Counsel: Serve as a trusted communications advisor to the highest-level executives, ensuring that their messages are clear, compelling, and aligned with business priorities.
  • Change Management: Guide communications strategies that support organizational change, partnering with key stakeholders to navigate transitions, anticipate employee sentiment, and foster a forward-looking and resilient culture.
  • Decision-Making & Ownership: Independently assess communications needs, develop recommendations, and make decisions within scope, escalating strategically when broader enterprise implications are identified.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Foster integrated communications by partnering with public relations, executive communications, marketing, and social media teams to maximize content reach and effectiveness.
  • Creative Storytelling: Apply storytelling techniques and data-driven insights to inform and improve communications strategies in support of business outcomes.

THE EXPERIENCE YOU BRING TO THE TEAM

Minimum Required Experiences

  • 6 years of experience working in Internal Communications in a corporate environment required; for-profit, private sector experience strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated strategic judgment, initiative, and independent decision-making appropriate for a senior individual contributor role.
  • Experience developing complex, strategic communications plans and successfully leading end-to-end implementation across a business division or enterprise.
  • Exceptional writing, editing, presenting, and storytelling abilities to develop impactful content for various internal channels and tailor communications to an author's voice and targeted audiences.
  • Excellent relationship management and project management skills, with the ability to lead multiple complex projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, deliver results, effectively influence and negotiate, facilitate meetings, and resolve conflicts including with colleagues who may be more senior to you.
  • Experience helping an organization navigate and communicate through change, advance strategic objectives, and address employee sentiment and feedback.
  • Proven ability to lead as a senior individual contributor to drive belonging, constructive challenge, continuous improvement, and alignment throughout the Public Relations and Operations team and across partnerships.
  • Ability to leverage and interpret data insights to track, measure, and analyze communications effectiveness, providing recommendations for improvement and adapting to evolving business needs.
  • Skilled in AP Style writing and collaborating across Microsoft Office Suite applications.

Desired Experiences

  • 8+ years of Internal Communications experience, with significant experience advising on and supporting executive communications.
  • Bachelor's degree in communications or public affairs preferred.
  • Exceptional executive presence and ability to engage confidently with senior leaders.
  • Understanding of corporate event planning, technology, and logistics.
  • Demonstrated ability to work respectfully and cooperatively with people of different functional expertise toward a common goal.
  • Ability to create and promote messaging that resonates with a variety of audiences.
  • Highly adept at managing project plans, resources, and people to ensure successful project completion.
  • Passion for learning the business, building relationships, and understanding different areas of expertise across the organization.

Target Pay Range: $123,000 - $161,000 a year

The hiring range for this role is set forth below. Final salaries will generally vary within that range based on factors that include but are not limited to, skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and other relevant qualifications.
